I think you would be able to ask to pay in instalments if they work out their mistake.0

I know a solder who was married when he joined up, so he was given married quarters as soon as he finished his basic training.
A year later some bright spark in the pay office spotted that he completed his first year
but hadn't paid any accommodation fees for living in the barracks. They DID NOT spot he had paid rent for his married quarters for a year. So, assuming that an 18 year old just finishing his first year must be single and living in the barracks they took a whole years money off him and paid him 70 odd pence for his months wages.
When he queried this they realised their mistake and said it would be rectified next month. They showed him the rule book and said sorry, but it clearly says any mistakes will be rectified the following month and no interim payments will be made.
Being close to this person, and working with high up officers I took up his case. It was a waste of time, they would do nothing.
If this case had of happened, say he was paid £1000 per month and they accidentally paid him £3,000 too much one month. Once they became aware of this they would simply stop paying him for 3 months to recover the money. What happened to him in those 3 months would be no concern of theirs.
In this case I think the OP should contact the pay people and explain what has happened. I'm sure they will be more humane than the army and find a reasonable way to fix the problem.0 -
Whether you contact your accounts department I think will depend a lot on the organisation you are in. Will they be understanding? Is the company currently going through some difficulties due to the credit crunch and is likely to make people redundant? If the OP believes this could cause problems perhaps they should look at how to pay them back as soon as possible.
If the OP is now in a better financial position as a result of this additional cash, perhaps they could take out the Egg Money card and use it as a mule card for a £3k balance transfer (see the Stoozing thread).0 -
Hang on a sec, you get paid 3k more than you were expecting and you couldn't wait till the following morning to find out the reason why, how were you going to pay your debts if you hadn't had the 3k ?
Let's hope they discover their mistake, and make you repay the amount fully and straight away. To me it sounds that you are basically dishonest.0 -
I can't believe that you were so quick to spend the money without checking what it was for! If I had received £3k extra from my employer I wouldn't have spent the money without checking that I was supposed to have it. Your employer will realise the error when they reconcile their payroll. There is no doubt that they are going to make you pay it back, and it won't be at £1 a week either! Even paying £100 a month back is going to take you 2 1/2 years to clear this new 'debt' to your employer! And what if you leave in the meantime? That would mean the whole lot would become payable at once! There is no way that your employer is going to believe that you thought that the money was supposed to be for you! Your employer is going to want the money back as soon as possible. If you belong to a union at work it might be helpful to contact them - they might be able to negotiate with your Personnel department as to how you are going to go about paying this money back.
I checked my online bank 10 mins ago, and it appears that I have received an extra payment today from tax credits (extra £100). I too have debts to pay, but I won't touch this £100 until I have spoken to tax credits in the morning in case its a mistake and I have to pay it back.MFW 2011 challenge - Aim: Overpay £414.26 a month/£5,000 a year. Surely it's an "unsolicited gift" and the OP can keep it? The same way if someone sends a 50" High Definition Plasma TV to your house you can legally keep it. http://www.consumerline.org/search/?cat=Goods+%26+Services&item=Unsolicited+Goods+and+Services0

This has got to be a wind up ~ NO-ONE gets over paid by £3k and *thinks* it could be right!!
Tax back? Of £3k ~ pull the other one it plays carols
Its simple, it was an error and you spent money which was NOT yours in a matter of hours. The company are more than within their rights to reclaim it and if they offer installments I would count yourself damn lucky.

This tax back thing sounds cool *waits for £3k to hit his account*
Was the debt urgent because it was to some crime lord who was going to torch the house down at midnight or something? You couldn't have asked at work the following day why 3K extra was in your account?
Basically, you spent their money and if I was them, I would find the whole tax thing pretty far fetched. After posting about receiving an email to my MSE username/email from 'Money Expert' (note the use of ' '), I am now unable to post on MSE. Such is life.0
