Jobseeking is driving me mad!

  • Send the application anyway, they'll be doing it on the basis of skills so I doubt they'd worry too much about it. When I got to the interview yesterday they told me they had seen my CV before through another agency, but it looked very different. I have no idea why that was because it was the first I heard of it... but it goes to show there are often fresh eyes!

Definitely letter, and typed not written, on decent paper. E-mail is fine for acknowledging because it can be done automatically, but it's a method of communication that shouldn't be abused. Do you prefer e-cards or paper birthday cards? ;)

I'll have to break open the stash of fancy paper I've not used since 2003 - and hope the printer doesn't play up with the thickness! Glad I kept it now....

I know how you feel with job hunting it's driving me mad too.
I have been looking for work now since beginning of March and got nowhere, i've had 2 interviews one i got a letter saying i hadnt got the job and the other the woman didnt even bother ringing and when i went past the cafe she'd changed the sign in the window saying must be mature, im only 24 obviously not mature enough. Personally i think thats age discrimination!!!
I've applied for everything, supermarkets, cafes, cleaning jobs even mac donalds have turned me down! It gets so frustrating, i hate signing on its a pain in the bum going down there every fornight only to get 47.95 a wk, which is better than nothing i no but i could be working, they dont help very much either. I was called in 4 an interview by them to check i was job searching so i went in with every letter, email etc from employers to prove it then she did a job search for me and after being there an hr she says i cant find nothing suitable this time... well yeah i no i have been trying 3months!!!
I'm hoping something will come along soon or ill go mad lol.
Good Luck with your job hunting :)
  • Hi all, just been reading through the threads and can sympathise with you.
I work part time but id love a full time job, im 26 (no kids)with 7 years experience in manufacturing and i obtained a nvq level 2 and electrical awareness certificate in this area i can't get a job though for love nor money because i fail the "aptitude test" so i dont even get to the interview stage.
i know factory work isnt an ideal career to some but i loved it the money is good.
when i was made redundant last year me and my partner moved and i really struggled to find something i finaly got a position in an offlicense but i detest working there (the manager has employed her partners son who gets away with all sorts) i have stepped up the ladder a bit after some hard work and im senior sales.
i have applied for and been interviewed at 2 super markets now so the experience helped me get a foot in the door hopefuly i'll hear something in the next 2 week.
It is hard work but you just have to keep at it and hope for the best im a total cynic and dont think im good enough for the jobs i apply for but i'll keep going if it kills me :T
    good luck to you all

  • We are in the same boat - my OH has been desperatley seeling work now for a few months. We have three kids to support.
He stared applying for design jobs (he is a graphic designer) - to no avail. He has gone to apply for everything and anything. Warehouse, admin, callcentre. He has registered with every agency...still nothing.

I cannot believe it. It has been so demoralising for him, he has often spent our last couple of pounds on the train fare to an interview to be told
'we get work in all the time, just nothing that would suit you at the moment..'

Anyway....i guess we will have to play the numbers game.....eventually a job must come up.......you have to laugh (otherwise you would cry!!):rotfl:

I check it every day but tbh it's not up to much. There is a big problem round here with agency's using it to advertise jobs that don't really exist, and when you phone up all they want is to put your details so they can tell their cliants they have x amount of people on their books. The people at the jobcenter do their best to stop it but it's practically impossible.

back to my number 1 hate at the moment.....recruitment agencies sticking their oar in! I've had more interviews from my own endeavours than through the recruitment agencies and I really feel that the agencies just muddy the waters and make the whole process worse....

Anyone tried "on spec" sending off a CV to a big employer? That's my Plan C if I need to in the next 4 to 5 weeks...

Please forgive me because I haven't read all the posts on this thread.

I left a job in march, because I just couldn't cope with it. I took another job soon after, totally different to anything I had ever done before, but it hurt my back so I left (before anyone comes up with smutty things, it was a cleaning job at a hotel lol)

Jobcentre basically told me I was a norty old lady and that at my time of life it would be difficult to get another job.

Since then I have signed up with an agency to temp, have done loads of temping in the past so didnt see a problem - 1st job they

s ent me had interview and feedback was they didnt really need anyone  2nd one, I had told them I didn't do shorthand or audio but thats what client wanted
I now apply for anything, am treating it like doing competitions, hopefully I will win a job one day :rotfl:

Had interview this week but not heard so thats a no no then! got a few applications out at the moment but will try another agency next week, a lot of my trouble is I dont drive, so agency dont think I can get to places (they all drive) am quite used to using public transport and am well aware to get to most places will have to leave at 7 for a 9 start.

Have to agree that a lot of jobs advertised on jobcentre website and also our local paper are agencies.....when you phone up that job has been filled.....but if you would like to come in and register with us..........

I will NOT let the jobcentre person win, I am NOT too old to get a job :rotfl:

Good luck to everyone else looking for work

I like your attitude....my conclusions at the moment are:

    1) the agencies are struggling to get jobs to justify their roles.
    2) there are still jobs out there and I stand a better chance going direct as agencies don't necessarily know best when it comes to rewriting my CV...every role I apply for gets an individual "interview ME" CV which is more than most recruitment agents can/will do.
    3) agents need people on their books and your needs are not necessarily high on their list...I (and Mrs Bis) are the only one's who know my long-term strategy and needs and can apply for roles that an agent may not think me suitable for (or lucrative enough for them).
    4) when it suits them, agents are quite capable of putting you forward for and getting you an interview for a job that you will hate BUT you feel you need to show willing and go..I've felt at least once that I was just the third guy in the mix to give them some one to compare against....
    5) some agents are actually quite good in what must be a difficult job!
