nice to see so many people saving money. !!
  • just remind myself to this topic, but I have no word to speak except this is useful thread I love reading every expert opinion here,
  • Thank you Martin for all your advice! I was always thirfty (known for having an eye for a bargain!) but when I was a student your website really came into its own. Since graduating I have become the office 'moneysavingexpert' and have recommended numerous colleagues on holiday money, paying off student loans (or not!), mortages, cheap hotel rooms and flights all from your website and they all now subscribe to the e-mail. Your mortgage quide was invaluable when I recently bought my first house and I got a AMEX platinum card to buy all the white goods and furniture at 5% cashback (over £100 cashback in one go!). Everything I buy online goes through quidco if possible, and I save money every year on home and car insurance. My proudest achievement however is splitting train tickets. My partner and I regularly use the east coast mainline and I have devised a spreadsheet to work out the cheapest split tickets for our journeys. We regularly get 1st class tickets cheaper than standard in advance and I often get requests from friends to work out their cheapeast ticket combinations!
    Thanks for all your help!

  • Hi

I am a big fan of MSE, and use the information posted for all sorts of dilemas. So I thought I would share my successes after a 6/7 year struggle.

At the start of my personal money saving challenge I had:

    £7500+ on credit cards (x3)
    £10400 car loan
    £700-£1000ish overdraft between 2 accounts
    £3000 owed to parents
    £79500 mortgage

At the start I had no money left at the end of the month and decided to come up with a plan. I cut everything, and I mean everything! I would make a great Tory!

All the usual stuff was first, weekly shopping habits, no eating out, changing energy suppliers, cancelling sky and using freeview only which I still do, and no holidays.

Also MSE provided me with the info to get my council tax band change, and go a cheque for £400 and now pay over £25 less a month:money:cheers martin.

Then the bigger stuff. I love cars, always have, but I went from doing 40k miles a year to about 6k miles with a job change. So I sold my beloved car, and with a push cleared the £10400 and got a £2400 loan. I was now over £150 a month better off, and got a small 3 door 206 which is fine, and I have a 5 year old (part of the reason I sorted my life out).

In the mean time I was working on the credit cards, starting with the highest interst first, which I must admit took ages to go down, and I think credit cards a very dangerous so much so that I have now cancelled them all. (I know they can serve people very well, but just caused me stress):exclamati

Changing my mortgage deal to a tracker 3 years ago worked out well, and at 1.69% above base rate I saved £153 a month on my previous deal.

Anyway now I have no loans:T no credit cards:T no overdraft:Tand paid my parents back every penny:beer:.

My mortgage is £72800 and starting to work on that and I have £7k in savings.

Thanks to Martin and his team, along with the responsible forum users for your help. I can sleep at night, and plan for the future. :j
