I bet their software will not prevent a double payment.
It might (automatically) prevent a payment between the 29th and 31st inclusive though.

And remember, HSBC is running FP's now.

I made my first payment on 19 July.

Today, I tried to make a second payment from my HSBC bank account. However, I received a message saying, 'Payment declined. Please contact the person that you are paying' (something like that).

You guys are right. I will wait until 1 Aug then.

I made one payment of £25 on 20th July. A couple of days later I tried to make a payment of £475 to bring it up to £500 - this was via transfer from my Bank of Scotland account. It wouldn't let me.

I tried setting up a Standing order for £475 from the same account payable on the 23rd. It happily did that so I now have £500 there. I have now amended the standing order to pay £500 on the 23rd of each month.

Perhaps it's now looking for a standing order?

I didnt think they could distinguish a payment from a SO - maybe its because you sent it from BOS which is part of the same group ?

Just curious...why pay on 23rd when you can pay on 1st?

    Possibly - I don't know.

No reason - it was just the date I happened to set it up.

However now I think about it it's best going in on the 1st of each month as I will get more interest.

mine's on 12% at a full £500 a month. However in order to get that I had to put £5k into the 6.5% Guaranteed Saver Account, which despite it's name is not Guaranteed at 6.5%!

Why would it not be guaranteed? If you fulfil the conditions of the account that is what you will get.
