  • Hi

Yes, I went shopping yesterday and noticed the same thing. I know how you feel. Try feeding 2 strapping sons and a husband? I asked at the Tesco checkout about reduced items and they said to go early morning 8 am - you could give that a go. We don't eat out at all because of the cost. I cook everything from scratch. You could try friendly farmers to get cheap meat by buying half a lamb or half a pig and sharing it with friends. What about growing some of your own - a bucket for potatoes and window boxes for salads? Very boring I know but every little helps.

If we became more self sufficent and grown some/all of our veg, baked our own bread etc the cost of living would be alot less and the satisfaction of "growing your own" would be priceless, but people seem to have lost touch with this for the sake of convienience food.

    Bread , milk , prescriptions , potatoes

    convenience food ?????????

you try living on a council extate in a flat with no garden and growing your own veg and keeping a cow:confused:

I do live a council estate but I have a garden, I don’t have a cow, well maybe the one that lives next door.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

shut up you muppet, stop being angry and take your head out your ar$*e, I was only saying that if people became more self sufficient in terms of growing their own stuff then they would reap the benefits, you can grow stuff in your window box, in a plant pot on your kitchen window ledge, and I do know the difference between the types of food you mention but all I was trying to say was why not try making it yourself, it is rewarding and educational, so please don’t bite my head off with a come back like that again, it was uncalled for!

I can only speak from experience about the farmer issue. We have experienced just this as I come from a 5 generation farming family. We have had to move away from cattle and milk production completely and have been forced after 250 years or so of historical farming to having a cross country course and riding stables. It was the only way that we were going to hang onto the farm in any form. The price that we would get on a litre of milk is 17p. The supermarkets take all the profits and the farmer is seeing none.

I think this is tragic. As a nation we are going to regret this, as it becomes less and less viable to import so much food. I feel sure we are going to want and need our farmers and the small trades that went along with them. Even small villages used to have their own butcher.

The supermarkets have to be blamed for a lot of this, and they are just in competition with each other to cut prices at every turn. Today we received a free leaflet from Somerfield saying half-price this, that and the other. Asda (Wal-mart) is one of the worst for screwing down prices, and people have come to expect food to be cheaper and cheaper.

You have hit the nail on the head, consumerism, and the likes of ASDA are promoting it, yes we should look out for the best bargain and live by our weekly/monthly budget but this does not mean we cant do a little to help, at least the supermarket could do is to reduce the amount of trading in the fruit/veg and fish/meat products, by allowing small traders like a butcher and a green grocer to trade as a concession within the shop, encourage farmers markets all over and bring the good quality and fresh food to the towns and cities, kwik save had the idea of allowing traders to trade from within its stores, but sadly the have gone now.
