It gets discussed on OS and Shop But Don't drop a fair bit - just isn't always easy to find in searches.
I came across a piece of official research a few months back that took the prices for an average backet (loaf of bread, bottle of milk, carton of OJ, butter, eggs and frozen peas) and it showed that from Jan 07 to Jan 08, they rose in price by almost 30% overall.
So, I've kept an eye on the same items, out of interest, and now, since the original Jan 07 figures, the same basket is almost 44% more expensive (that's 15% since the beginning of this year) :eek:DFW Nerd no. 884 - Proud to [strike]be dealing with[/strike] have dealt with my debts0 -
If we became more self sufficent and grown some/all of our veg, baked our own bread etc the cost of living would be alot less and the satisfaction of "growing your own" would be priceless, but people seem to have lost touch with this for the sake of convienience food.
I agree and 99% of what I eat I make myself. I also tend to shop in the evenings to try and get some bargains. I'd like to grow some veg as well but living in a flat limits my options (and what with working, cooking, etc, etc, it's difficult to find the time).
I haven't noticed my shopping bill increasing too much but then I don't/can't eat wheat or milk products and it seem to be these that are largely effected.0 -
Is there a thread anywhere that lists peoples weekly/montly spend on the 'big shop'? Or would this be the place to ask people about that? Is £77 average for 2 people?0
-
I don't know if this is the right place, but our weekly big shop for 2 people for all meals (apart from the odd snack/ sandwich/ snickers bar etc) is about £40 a week ish. We never buy ready meals or any prepared stuff, it is all fresh ingredients, and very little meat - that is too expensive for us! Actually it is £40 when the OH goes and more like £50-60 when I go! But last year, it used to be £30 a week roughly.Essenchill wrote: »Is there a thread anywhere that lists peoples weekly/montly spend on the 'big shop'? Yeah - it almost doubles when my OH does the shopping (on his own) too!!0

Our weekly spend was about £45 a week until the begining of the year its now gone up to about £60 a week and again we dont buy convienience food weve also noted that the discounted stuff in the supermarket is a lot more scarse we used to get a lot of bargain bread etc for about 1p but not in the last few months unless there are lots of moneysavers getting to the shops before me!!Official DFW nerd 206 Proud to be dealing with my debt

I always head for the reduced to clear section, some days you get more, I think Mondays seem to be good with all the extra weekend food or something! And this is a little know thing that in the freezer section there is sometimes a reduced section, where you can get pizzas with dented boxes, or fishfingers with no packet and stuff like that. There are bargains to be had!0

Why not come and join us all on the monthly grocery challenge over on the Old Style board. There are lots of ideas there to help bring the cost of your shopping down, and the peeps are very friendly.
HERE is the one for June.

Strange ... but we noticed this , this last few weeks. We don't spend on extravagance or anything . More recently we have changed from Sainsburys to Morrisons/Iceland . Problem I find living in central London , there aint any superstores to get too easily (NO CAR). Also buying fresh veg etc from the local market . Noticed the savings already.0
