Meanwhile, back to the chat, moneysaving and hints and tips: which of you is it has just brought this freezing cold snap across the channel with you? And when are you taking it away again with you? :rotfl:
On a personal note, if this thread is moved off one of 'my' boards, I shall keep up a subscription to it because I really enjoy reading about your travels, lifestyles and adventures.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
Thanks for all the input, Sue.
I've read Martin's excuse for excluding things foreign. If he'd said that he can assume responsibility for articles written about the UK, but not for anything at all on any part of his site for foreign advice, then that would have been easy to accept.
This discussion started off by a minor debate about whether Silver Savers is the most appropriate place for this thread. I think the simple answer is that it isn't.
(The diversion into eligibility for benefits was entirely irrelevant to the discussion taking place, even if interesting in its own right).
Yes, Asea, bless her, trotted over here after her enquiry elsewhere, but not everyone will be brave enough to enquire or else be bothered to do so. Why make it hard for them?
Anyway, good luck with whatever follows!
And in the meantime, I'd remind you, young lady (!), that it was the wind from the north-west that made us down here have the wettest November for 50 years, with just two days of sunshine recorded by both us and the weather people in Toulouse.
The good news (if you like this sort of thing) is that the rain has fallen as snow on the Pyrenees, and the ski resorts are open.

Bikinis, tights, I think we need photos. :rotfl:
I have sought advice. Watch This Space. But I confess I'm hoping someone else will move it, if that seems the right thing to do, because then you won't be able to shout at me if you don't like where you end up. :rotfl:Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

"So that droopsnout lives in an area famous for its garlic," I can hear you saying to yourselves, "Well, big deal! I mean, you can only eat the stuff, can't you? And not too much in one go, either!"
Ah well, ladies and gentlemen, this may seem to be the way of things, but then we shouldn't ignore the creativity of country folk. So here, for your edification and delectation, is what else you can do with parts of the garlic plant!
So what has this to do with money-saving? Well, it's obvious, isn't it? As a euro today costs over 87p, we need to make the most of them. So here is inspiration to create your own works of art, at virtually no cost, from the waste of your garlic purchases!

Arguably this thread would sit more comfortably as a sticky in the Travel forum here:

Meanwhile, back on topic......
Well here we are, SKI-ing (Spending Kids' Inheritance) in Granada. We have a home exchange - this place is terrific! The house is right in the Albaizin (old traditional Moorish quarter), is much bigger than ours and you go out of the gate and across the road and there is the Mirador del Alhambra - a world famous view of the world-famous palace! We couldn't have hoped for anything better.
They have set off to our little old white house in the mountains where the kitchen used to be a stable and toothless Miguel still works his mule on the terraces - they insist this is what they want - hope they are not disappointed.
Anyway we are here until Monday lunchtime - we'll make the best of it!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Have a fantastic time! Hope you don't spend all weekend making the most of their broadband!! lolMuch of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930 -
Hello, been away for awhile since my first post number 884.
merrywidow asked what attracted me to Luxembourg. Well of course it was a lady.
In 1982 French friends who had worked and lived in Luxembourg invited a few people to Paris for a New Years Eve party. I was invited, as well a French girl who had been brought up and lived in Luxembourg. We met and.................. 26 years later here we are in Luxembourg with our 17 year old daughter.
In the mean time we lived a few years in London and then made the move here.
We are permanent residents paying taxes and social security here. As a UK citizen I am now resident in Luxembourg and I have done my best to be domiciled here by reducing as many links to the UK as possible. Some of you may know the British Government have very vague rules about domicile and I do not want to pay any inheritance tax.
My second (see post 884 for first) money saving tip is - Make a will. Anyone living overseas is subject to local laws when you die and in most of Europe they operate a "forced inheritance" regime which can be a very big surprise to some Brits.
