    Well done! Great stuff!

According to ViaMichelin, our journey to Dunkerque costs 115€ in fuel and tolls. You could add to this, say, 45€ for an overnight stop in a cheapie motel. So 160€. Plus wear and tear on the car.

Our trip to Bilbao costs 53€.

The Dunkerque sailing will cost us £19. Total journey approx 185€.

The Bilbao sailing would cost us £349 single, including a 2-bed inside cabin. But in fact, in January there is only one sailing from Portsmouth, on 3rd. The price I'm quoting is for 1 February. Total cost in region of 450€.

No contest! A crossing at £190, though, would make me think seriously about it!!

:eek: No way would I pay that! I wonder why it is so expensive?? Especially in January. It was over £400 on some dates in the height of the school summer holidays, but you wouldn't expect it to be that price in the winter!

(Edited to add: There used to be a calendar with all the fares on on the PofB site, but I can't find it now).

On 3 Jan, the crossing is £390!!

    5 Feb: £365
    15 Feb: £249
    22 Feb: £199

All depends on demand, I suppose.

  • Yes I suppose it does depend on demand - I suppose on 3rd January it is still the Christmas holidays and if there are any Spaniards travelling home, they celebrate Christmas on 6th January so can be in Spain in time to do that.

Hello there, a nice thing happened today.

I got a phone call from my friend saying that her sister's granddaughter (9) needed 'something from Spain' to take into school and had we got anything?

My husband has LOADS of photographs on his laptop, so he has printed out about a dozen of our village, showing the scenery, the people and the animals, and written a little bit about each of them for the girl to take in. There is also a map to show where the area is in Spain.

I hope it will be enjoyed by the children (the Teacher will certainly enjoy it - a ready made lesson!) .

I think the children will enjoy hearing about Gerald the Gecko who lives in our kitchen and keeps it clear of flies, and who sticks to the walls and can even climb up the glass windows. They will also like the picture of Manolo the Shepherd and his sheep and Trufo his sheepdog, and the one of our friend Pascal and his mule Chico who walked from our village, across Spain, over the Pyrenees and into France last year. I think they will like the picture of Tomas ploughing with his mule team, in between his grapevines, on a hillside with snow-covered mountains in the background.

They will be given a small glimpse of a part of Spain that most people don't know exists.

We have really enjoyed putting the package together. The girl's grandma is collecting it in half an hour. Hope she's pleased!

Update on this just to say the little girl got top marks and the photos are on the classroom wall. The children LOVED the pictures. The girls tended to like the one of Gris, the old retired mule* with his long grey ears, resting in an orange orchard, and the boys liked Gerald the Gecko.

A pleasing and satisfying result, and my husband once again has his beautiful displays on show in a classroom!

(*edited to add - they ARE actually mules (donkey father, horse mother). Many Brits call them donkeys, even some of the Brits in the village. Just so you know I am not using the wod instead of donkey! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mule )

    Hi
Have been quiet for a while. Have managed to bag some real bargain fares to North Cyprus with Pegasus. Have booked to come and go about 4 times, usually for about 7 weeks at a time at about £80 return. Am sorted for the next year. Unfortunately, they are from Stansted, which is a bit of a trek from Whitby, but am flying down from Newcastle to Stansted on 24th October for our return. The only flights we have booked which are not on Pegasus are our January flights when we are going Monarch from Manchester. I have managed to book Man Airport Travelodge rooms both ways at £12 each ... bargain!
