Luckily Jane F-W (Hugh's mum ;) ) won the shepherds' pie cook-off. Hers was made from leftover roast lamb and fresh mashed potato. Delia's was made from frozen mash discs and tinned lamb mince that looked like dog food _pale_ :spam:

He's also taking apart a whole lamb carcase and showing how to use everything. He says that all us meat-eaters should take a stint as butcher's apprentice. Where do I sign up :j

It's being repeated on C4 at 7pm on Saturday.

I'm not sure that would be as comfortable as it sounds. :p
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

    Hello all ...

We started an asparagus bed last year ... and watched it sprout but couldn't cut it ... this year for the last three weeks we have had a succession of lovely spears ... about 6 to 8 every two days ... (10 crowns planted in a 4 x 5 deep bed) ... we must stop cutting this year at the end of May ... next year we can go until mid June ...

I would recommend it to anybody ... not difficult at all ... and so rewarding

    ... and mrbadexample ... it's far comfier than you'd think ... :^)

  • Littlebill - At the risk of getting personal, I can only assume your wee look like limeade? Seriously, I am jealous.

    I love them griddled.

  • The Bristol 'smallholding' they were building is just round the back of my allotment. I didn't know they were there, but I'm going to have a nose tonight. I would be seriously worried for any animals they keep - it's a bad neighbourhood.

You're advised not to cut in the first year so that the crown builds up strength for the years ahead ;)

More information on the Greenfingered board :D

I think HFW said not to cut on the first year as either it wasnt ready or it would produce a better crop next year or something  I was watching but not paying full attention to the asparagus bit :o as OH kept turning over to check footie score (we missed both goals, ooops ;) )

From memory, you only start to cut asparagus when the crowns are three years old. So if you buy one year-old crowns, you don't cut the year you get them (as that's their second year), but cut the following year.
