How to make a website?

I would like some information about how to build/make a website- just thinking of a basic site, nothing flash.

I dont know much about computers, just the basics like removing/installing hardware and i am pretty web savvy...but i know nothing about web design!

If i could ask a few basic questions to get me started, any help would be great.

How do i begin to make my website? (i've read some info on html)

Which program do i use? or do you need to buy special software?

Just a few pointer will be great. Thanks for anyhelp given

  • http://www.tucows.com/ I would search here for free web software.

And also I did a night course at my local college as you can look at
books all day long, but you cant beat hands on experience.

    Course cost about £100

You can go one of two ways when creating a website. Either a WYSIWYG editor (What You See Is What You Get) like Dreamweaver or Frontpage.

Or use a text editor like TextPad (or one of the plenty of free and decent editors out there) and code it yourself.

Personally I prefer the latter as you have more control over what you're doing, and will learn more. It is the harder of the two and does take time to learn how to code html and css etc... yourself. Well worth it in my opinion.

To get you started here is a great site that covers most of the basics.

Follow some of the tips, guides, tutorials etc... and you should easily be able to knock up a basic page.

oh and while it's always good to know how to do stuff yourself it's sometimes handy to be able to take advantage of a good natured genius or two - for some very nice (and well put together) menu systems and so on that you can plug into your site pretty quickly have a look here:

  • Hi

Im sorry but i would like to pick you brains a little further. I've been reading/learning about building my website over the last couple of days.

I have a basic homepage (thats all i want) set up, with other pages containing the information. Has been nice and easy so far :). However i would like to add a search function to the from page. Ive looked on the websites provided but have been unable to find info on it. If someone could point me in the right direction or give advice on implementing them, that would be great.

what im looking to find out:

When you have searched for something how is the result displayed? I only want minimum information returned-nice and simple.

Can you tell (certain keywords) your search function what to find?

Thank you for any help :)

Hi Mr Skint, thank you for those links.

That does look like a very easy way to search your site.

However i was thinking of a search facility to search a specific bit of data-like on ebay- you enter a keyword and it brings the sales up relating.

I only want my search function to look at one specific page (like a long list) and extract the few lines of data that relates to the keyword search.

I hope your confused cos' i am!!:)

Aah your looking for a keyword search within your own site
so that whenever anybody searches a piece of text on your site
it goes to that paragraph that contains that text, I that right
    or am I shooting blanks.............
