Aah your looking for a keyword search within your own site
so that whenever anybody searches a piece of text on your site
it goes to that paragraph that contains that text, I that right
    or am I shooting blanks.............

No mate your not shooting blanks....your right

Basically i am listing a fair amount of data and want to pull that bit of data up. I dont wnat the keyword search to search the whole of the site, just one page with the relevant condensed info.

So how do i tell the search facility what data it can look at?
  • Er dunno about that but what I would of done is set out a hyperlink
    navigational structure like this,

So you might have a Index with hyperlinks from the Index that point
to a specific piece of text, So in other words you have an index of stuff
like er,, Fish, Chips, Peas, Beans. all these words are hyperlinked so that when
they are clicked on you shoot straight to the first word within the paragraph starting with Chips for example, and then you have a (back to top) option.

I know there is a better way of doing this so you can actually search within
your own site, but I cant remeber how its done.
  • Ok Mr Skint, thans very much for your help-really apreciated.

Ill do some more googling :):(

If anyone knows what im on about, maybe you have done it on your own website? - if could help/advise me then id buy you some virtual beer
  • I know what you mean its just come to me, you need a site content search
    am I getting warmer.
  • I think what im trying to achieve would be easier if i entered the info into a database rather than a list type. But i wouldnt know where to begin with the database idea.

    Just reading this now
  • Depending on what you want to do with the site and how much you want to learn you could use open-source (ie free) software such as mambo. Basically this is a fully customisable databas driven website which you can then bolt on different components as you wish, I recommend you start reading up on php and mysql as this is the coding behind it.

The site is basically a content management site and contains a whle host of features such as the search facility you require

Some useful sites to look at would be

    https://www.mambojoe.com
    https://www.mamboforge.net
    https://www.mamboserver.com

    and for free hosting

    https://www.jamroll.co.uk

    Hope this helps
  • I have read a little about whats been recommended, however there seems several avenues to go down.

I am going to describe what i would like and hopefully someone could point me down the correct route.

The website layout would be quite similar to www.saynoto0870.com I would like a search facility like that one then return the results which has been searched for. If someone could tell me how the website is written and the type of search script which is being used.

This would be really helpful as i could then read up on what i need to.

    Thanks for any help
