without looking for the exact prices, 'cos i really can't be bothered, aol @ £5/month vs newnet @ £10/month, difference of just over £1/week, how tight is that budget?

It does with many of the cheapskate providers, you may be " technically competent " however some things need ISP intervention.

As long as you are happy with your ISP, fine, however it would not I suspect be the best option for the less technically minded, nor for many new customers that would be forced in to a long contract period with a company with a very poor track record.

well I have been with aol for quite some time and i've only ever needed to call them twice, prior to that i was with bt and had nothing but trouble even though i was paying them £27 a month, theres been a lot of bad press about aol, mainly on forums, and most of it by people jumping on the "lets have a go at aol" bandwagon.
like caden says, how many folk do you know that spend £8 a month, every month, phoning aol customer services, i doubt you know of anyone that fits that discription

Most of it that I read is from actual customers of AOL etc.

Take a look at DSL Zone, ISP Review and ThinkBroadband for plenty of suffering AO Hell Customers.

No, I don't think I'll bother, I thought I'd made myself clear that I am quite happy with the service that AOL provides.
