Broadband advice please!

My 79 year old dad has just bought a new PC and we need to get him on broadband. He will be a very light user, home banking etc and although I do expect him to start using it a bit more he won't be playing online games or downloading music films etc. There is loads of press about providers causing problems but does anyone have some advice/ recommendations about reliable broadband. He isn't on cable and has an existing BT line with free weekeend and evening calls. (I have AOL at home which I'm used to but I wouldn't suggest that for him.)
thanks

My experience - under no circumstances use Tiscali. Useless. Low charges but terrible service. I've incurred £40 in call charges in less than a month speaking to their technical helpdesk.

I'd go for a low-user tarriff. O2 have some good deals if an O2 mobile customer. I've now switched to them after giving up on Tiscali and I'm impressed.

    Why not AOL?

Out of the lower priced uncomplicated ISP's I would say they are probably the best, I agree with Tozer about Tiscali, wouldn't touch them.

I have family who have just changed to Tiscali and they say it's bad.
I changed from AOL to Talk Talk 6 months ago and it's been great.
Your Dad being a light user will find it is all he needs and will save money.

IDNet, they come top in customer reviews at ThinkBroadband, excellent company, excellent support, one month contract, so if you are not happy you can leave.

0800 Support Number to expert support that is UK based and truly helpful.

A little expensive though, £40 setup fee, then £17.99 month.

It all depends on how you define " expensive "..if you are happy to suffer the dire service from some of the cheapskate providers fine, I personally don't grudge paying just about 60 pence a day for a first class service, I reckon that it is excellent value for the peace of mind and no slow downs at all 24/7.

I suppose it comes down to personal choices really, but this is principally a money saving forum, my broadband connection is perfectly stable and reasonbly fast, and I'm only paying £9.99 per month (34 pence a day) of which I'm very happy with :)

I pay double that, I have a 30 day contract, so I can leave at any time the service falls below my extremely high standards (I'm technically competent enough to know if it ever does), I can use my connection any way I like, no port blocking or shaping, my ISP has made a firm commitment NOT to sell my data to some dodgy Americans (phorm), and I have defined usage caps, with tools to measure my usage, rather than undefined 'fair use policies'.

Do not go with Tiscali...the customer service is complete rubbish and they charge you a fortune for the priviledge!
