Thanks for all the comments and advice guys.

What subjects would you think would be the traditional subjects and well established?

    Thanks

    Amit

    Mathematics
    Economics
    Eng Lit/ Lang
    History
    Geography
    Languages (including the Classics!)

As a rule of thumb I would discount any subject that has been available for less than fifteen years (a teacher should be able to tell you this).

I wouldn't go for Sociology, far too vague for a future Finance bod.

  • Definitely do maths. I wouldnt recommend further maths, as the leap from gsce maths to A level maths alone is large enough! the others depends on what you enjoy, but I still think do economics over business studies any day.

    Hey thanks,

I went on the Cambridge website and they see these as the softer AS-levels subjects which they don't accept...
    • Accounting
    • Art and Design
    • Business Studies
    • Communication Studies
    • Dance
    • Design and Technology
    • Drama/Theatre Studies
    • Film Studies
    • Health and Social Care
    • Home Economics
    • Information and Communication Technology
    • Leisure Studies
    • Media Studies
    • Music Technology
    • Performance Studies
    • Performing Arts
    • Photography
    • Physical Education
    • Sports Studies
    • Travel and Tourism
But they do say you can have it in a ratio for example 2:1 or 3:1 - 2/3 Traditional Subjects & 1 Soft subject.

So am just deciding what to do at the moment :(

I'm currently at Warwick University in my 2nd year of a degree in Accounting and Finance, and I have gained a placement with Ernst and Young for this summer. I did Maths, Further Maths, Economics, Information and Communication Technology and General Studies at A Level.

I agree with the other posters that Economics is more highly regarded than Business Studies - and also as part of my degree course and the other Business courses at Warwick you have to study modules in Economics.

I think (but only if you wanted to do it) Further Maths is a better option than Accounting. I had never studied any accounting before I went to uni, but I have not found it too difficult. I think Further Maths was of greater use to me in my degree course - I have had to do a couple of modules in Stats, most of which I had already covered in my A Level course! But, Further Maths was very tough and takes a lot of dedication, so really I would advise you to go with what you think you will enjoy, but bear in mind that the 'top' unis and so in turn the Big 4 accountancy firms will be looking for people that offer more traditional subjects.

Politics is a great subject, very traditional and interesting. However, History would generally be viewed as a stronger subject at A-Level.

I would say it is borderline, more accepted than the soft subjects noted above, but not as much as Economics, History etc.

My school didn't offer it, and that was very into traditional subjects (with the exception of Art, it did not offer any of the subjects on the Cambridge list).

I would favour Politics over Sociology (what does Sociology actually teach you?), and English Lit?

If I could go back, I would take:

    Mathematics
    Economics
    French
    English Literature or Latin

Well Sociology looks good to employees because it is regarded as a high Social Science which shows to them you have intense knowledge of the world around you and what is going on. Which shows you can work with a wide range and different types of clients and also it has different topics I find interesting like Poverty,Wealth,Family households,Sociologic Methods,Politics and many others which could support me in the long term in subjects I am thinking of taking like Economics & Politics.

It is also to me like a less pressured subject to get away from the harder subjects like Maths,Economics,Politics while all four subjects are considered traditional A-level subjects and not softer unaccepted ones by Cambridge & potentially top universties.
