I transferred to Ebico (gas) a few months ago and so far they have been good. I have received letters (from Southern Elec) to tell me when to read the meter and be transferred but I haven't had my first bill from them yet so will wait and see. They still come up as cheapest for me when I checked yesterday.

Am I really a high user then? Quarterly usage gas 2070 kWh and electric1849 kWh. I am looking to switch providers as I am currently with British Gas for dual fuel and on their standard rate tariff Gas 7.259p / 3.688p and Electric 28.871p / 9.612p. These are very high compared to the others shown on the comparison site I visited. British Gas came up as the cheapest supplier for me (what a joke!) but for tariffs I am not eligible for, but Ebico came out best after them. I am currently paying by direct debit, gas £49pm and electric was £52 but they have just put it up to £105pm, hence the reason for switching. It seems that switching to Ebico could take them up to three months, according to some reviews I have read. Can anyone give me advice on the best way to go about switching and their experiences with Ebico as a similar user as us please?

You are a high user for electricity at around 5,500 - 6,000 kWh pa.

It is impossible to say about your gas as everyone has low gas consumption in the summer. It is the annual consumption that is important.

BG click 5 and Ebico are the cheapest tariffs because they have yet to increase them in the latest round, it is expected they will increase soon.

What BG tariff are you not eligible for? Their cheapest is Click 5 and anyone can have that tariff. Their 'social' Tariff(Essentials) is more expensive than Click 5.

Everyone on Ebico seems to be very happy with the service they get - there are hundreds of posts to this effect if you do a search.
  • Thanks for the info Cardew, guess I will have to try and reduce our usage asap! The click energy 5 says it's for credit meters only, my meter is under the stairs? I don't know what a credit meter is, but assumed you have to pay tokens or something like that, or an old fashioned budget account system?

Yes I have found a lot of happy people reviews for Ebico so maybe I will take the plunge?

A credit meter is a 'normal' meter i.e. you get it read by a meter reader or yourself and get a quarterly bill.

The meter for which you buy tokens is a pre-payment meter and that can't be used with Click 5, but you can with Ebico.

Generally Internet accounts such as Click 5 will be cheaper than ebico unless you have very low consumption.
  • Oh Thanks Cardew, I didn't realise that, so maybe I should just stick with BG but change from standard tariff to Click Energy 5 tariff. I didn't make a decision yesterday, instead I ordered an electricity usage monitor. The thread yesterday about the man who was made redundant and then went around with his monitor and unplugged things in the house made me want to know why we are such high users. Might be a waste of £32.45 but at least I will feel like I am making a more informed decision. I do a lot of baking so maybe it's the oven. I stopped using the dishwasher and tumble dryer last month and unplug pc, tv, sky, microwave, kettle every night and when not in use, but it will be interesting to see it in black and white (well black and grey).

I checked the comparison sites and Ebico only came out dearer if I used more than about 10,000kwh a year.

In case you miss the other tread:

Ebico prices to increase on the 2nd of October 2008

Over the past few months there has been a great deal of coverage in the media of the ongoing developments in energy prices. Wholesale electricity and gas prices have risen by over 40% in the 6 months since April this year. At Ebico, we have made a commitment to our customers to keep our prices as low as possible for as long as possible. But now we have to take steps towards covering our costs. So I am sorry to say that, with effect from the 2nd of October 2008, the price of our EquiGas and EquiPower tariffs will be increased. I will be writing to all customers with details of these increases but, in general, they represent an increase of 31.9% in our gas price and an average of 24.3% for our electricity (prices for electricity vary by region and are available on our EquiPower rates page).
I appreciate that these are very significant price increases and that many customers will be keen to reduce the amount of energy they need to heat their home. If you’d like to know more about the help available to make your home more energy efficient, visit our Insulation grants page.
Even with these price increases, EquiGas and EquiPower remain competitively priced and continue to offer:
    No standing charges

The same simple flat rate for everybody regardless of your payment method

Help for the whole community in getting a fair deal from the benefits of energy competition

That gum you like is coming back in style.
  • Do ebico charge an IGT charge?

Crikey  . That's a BIG rise. Would that be the biggest %tage coimbined rise of any energy company this year??

PS New Gas figure already on their site for calculation purposes - 3.77p per kwh. £716 per annum for me

New leccy figure (Yorkshire region) 14.07p per kwh £703 per annum on my 5000 kwh usage
