2,000 kWh usage is not low - that is normal to high usage (for a dual fuel customer). And if it's still the same price...

My point was that with electricity you cannot "easily save 50 to 66% with Ebico" and that around 2,000kWh the costs are roughly equal for the same conditions.

Up to 500kWh pa Ebico is 42% cheaper and that reduces to zero advantage at about 2000kWh.

Surely the average for a dual fuel customer is the much quoted 3,300kWh? That 'average' figure doesn't include the 'all electric' households; or at least that is how I understood the figures.

However I certainly agree that go for Ebico at the same price as I like the ethos of the company.

In fact I will consider switching to them for my little used annex when my fixed to April 2010 tariff ends - my present Tier 1 prices for Gas and Electricity are lower than Ebico's flat rate - I would always pay by DD however as I just couldn't be bothered to pay quarterly.

Petty silliness. The point is clearly that the average cost per unit decreases the more you use. And the Tier 1 costs are not trivial. In particular, with electricity, there are large numbers of dual fuel customers who only need to use 80 to 120% of Tier 1 units and so will see a savage decrease in their average cost with a larger consumption.
Sorry if you feel it is petty, my point is that reducing your consumption will always reduce your bill, yes the 2 tier structure makes follow on units cheaper, but as mentioned elsewhere this is to cover the suppliers fixed costs, the same way as a standing charge does.
Find your most appropriate supplier, but cutting donw on what you use will probably make the biggest difference to those who have already switched of their legacy suppliers standard tariff.
For most suppliers the Tier 1 threshold for electricity is 900kWh (for BG it is 500).
With 25 million domestic electricity supply points in Britain, almost any subset could be described as a large number, but those using 720-1080kWh per year would still struggle to approach 1% of that IMO.

    PS, yes, I know I'm a pedant....

<boring (but pertinent) rubbish about means, modes and medians retracted pre-posting for dullness>

(But I still think the median and mode are a lot lower than many imagine and lower than that infamous mean of 3,300. Of course, I selectively exclude drooling slack-joweled soaps and console and halogen-lighting junkies from my sample and all figures are pulled from my proverbial.)

I must be doing something wrong then, I use around 2000 Kwh per annum and always thought it was fairly low, thats only around 40Kwh / week.

Sorry, wasn't accusing you of sybaritic indulgence, I meant in the range of low usages 2000 kWh per annum is at the upper end. On a national scale it is fairly low.
  • Hi, just wanted to know, has Ebico outsourced its billing and customer care to SSE?

I have just had this quarter`s bill from ebico and have worked out the actual saving I will make by transferring to BG click 6, electricity only. I have included the dd allowance. My saving on this one bill will be £15

My transfer will take place on 23rd dec

I am really over the moon as our total gas plus electricity bill this quarter is £91.11. This is really good for 2 of us in a 3 bed townhouse all day and I can only put it down to the remoska and the ecocamel, as well as the low energy (expensive) biobulbs which I have had for 3 years now. We are warm and cosy and I cook and bake every single day so no discomfort at all

    :D

I'm sorry to hear you were dissatisfied with Ebico & their supply partner for customer services, Swalec (SSE).

It appears you have also since decided to move on from British Gas and have switched to Scottish Power now and are experiencing poor customer service from them too.

Best of luck in finding a supplier that you are pleased with ... but you do seem to be running out of options fast!

Is 6 monthly billing classed as good customer service? I genuinely can't remember the last time my father got a bill through the post. Luckily, I check his meters every week and make sure his DD is in the right ballpark but how many other Ebico customers of his age (80) would do this? 6 monthly billing is useless IMO as a whole lot can happen to consumption in that space of time. Rightly or wrongly, I reckon in the majority of cases people will only concentrate their mind on their consumption after getting a bill through the post. Twice a year isn't very good IMO.
