What can I cook for Dinner Tonight?

Options
Having made it through the week using whatever is in the cupboards, I finally have nothing left to use. Does anyone have any ideas what I can cook for dinner tonight on my budget of £10 (dinner needs to feed myself, DH and DD (aged 6).

Thanks for any input!!
Squares knitted for my throw ~ 90 (yes!!! I have finally finished it :rotfl: )
Squares made for my patchwork quilt ~ 80 (only the "actual" quilting to do now :rotfl:)

  • If you've got any potatoes you can make "Mock Fish Cakes". They are so yummy & cheap to make.

Grate potatoes & 1 onion, salt & pepper, 1 egg and enough plain flour to make mixture a bit firm. Fry in oil & drain. You can add some chopped bacon or ham, chives etc if you have it but they are nice without it too.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • Do you have to go out to shop then? I find that spaghetti or pasta is a cheap and filling meal. You can make a sauce out of chopped toms, onion, any other veg and then top off with grated cheese. (I usually cook veggie so don't use meat)

Or make a shepherds pie, this always goes down well (I use quorn) but I know some mince is quite cheap.

In the Cooking section of the MEGA Index sticky there's a few threads gathered under "Inspiration" that should give you some ideas and, better still, he sez, getting his brain in gear, there's a thread listed under "challenges" called Feed My Six For £1.62

I would go for the shepherds pie idea. You just need mince, carrots, onions and potatoes and top with a bit of cheese. You can also offer broccoli or other veg to go with it too and its nice and filling.

Otherwise I'd go for a stew. You can either get a cheap cut of beef and cut it up yourself or get the ready diced beef which isnt too expensive. Cook with onion, carrots, swede, leeks, parsnips. Makes a lovely meal too!

My eldest daughter doesn't like mince of any sort so I cook some chicken in the oven, cut it into bite size pieces and cover with gravy in a shepherds pie dish and put mash on the top. So she has a chicken version of shepherds pie!!! She even has the cheese on top too!
  • You could always do Caterinas homemade pizza for !!!!!! all money and HEAPS of flavour! Or else if you have got some rice hiding somewhere just mix it with some tuna, sweetcorn, peas, garlic, onion and use like paella- cheapo meal and yummy result!

Egg and chips - dead cheap.

Make risotto :) I am making it tonight!
Dont have to use white wine as you have a little one. I bought Tescos own risotto rice last night, About £1, a couple of onions, chicken/vegatable stock and a couple of peppers.
It'll come to way under £10!
You can maybe buy a nice pudding with the money left over :)
