Saving money is not just the preserve of the poor but the frugal minded business men (and women) too! I'd like to fall into the latter group one day!

I remember as a naive 20-something moaning to my mum about a friend who had pots of (family) money and how tight she was! She used to take a bottle of vodka in her bag to a nightclub and then just buy tonic water to add to it. Hence, she never bought a round of drinks!

My mum's comment was that "those with plenty of money don't get to keep it by frittering it away"

    ;)

And so I've learned ..... most of those I know "with money" are very careful about how they spend it. Those that openly spend money generally have shed loads of debt - cards, loans & (horror!) mortgaging their property for spending money:eek: .

Reminds me of another friend ..... every year he takes out a mortgage on the basis of a bonus he might get at the end of the year
    Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac ;)

For this poll to tell you anything wouldn't you need to know if someone worked full or part-time or are part-timers supposed to put FTE earnings in the poll?

Also assume you just want individuals earnings not household earnings?

I'm in Band F, but have company vehicle which I pay loads of tax for, have a low mortgage, and no other depts. Nice to see lots of others in same band as me.

I don't get the whole secrecy thing about earnings. Anyone could find out quite easily what I earn by knowing what I do - all you need to know about anyone in the NHS is their job and roughly how long they've been working and thanks to the payscales of agenda for change you can make a pretty educated guess! I'm a newly qualified occupational therapist, I earn just under 20k, which I personally feel isn't bad for only being 1 year out of uni!

Of course others are right, it's all perception anyway. I had to laugh the other day when it was on the news that newly qualified doctors were protesting at having their free accommodation taken away - they get a starting salary of 7k+ more than most NHS professionals (nurses, physios, OTs etc) anyway, yet feel they'll be on the breadline if they have to start paying rent like the rest of us! How much do they envisage the average rent to be?!
Also I live in the north, where the average income is quite a bit lower than in the south. I'd probably feel a lot poorer if I moved 200 miles south!

Personally I don't care. So long as I have enough to live on I'll be happy.

Although my wage is above the average in the poll, I don't earn enough for what I do :(

I'm a sahm, so I don't earn anything, but I put K because that's what my dh earns. To look at us you wouldn't think he made that. I last bought 2 pairs of shoes for myself at Christmas, to replace my ones that were falling to bits. :o We very rarely go on holidays - and never go abroad for one. I see people who earn less than dh, yet by their lifestyle you'd think they made twice as much. I don't know how they do it.

Well as an early retiree my take home pension and money from investments is around the £10,000 mark a year. having no debt and kids left the nest, I am happy with that after paying all my bill I spend the rest on caravanning holidays.

It doesn't matter how much you earn, just how much you manage to keep after expenses
