Hey all, just been reading the discussion about bumping and wanted to make a comment. Not sure why people get so annoyed about bumping, if you check your thanks you want re-enter comps. I can see why it gets annoying for people but at the same time these forums should be friendly places and i'm not sure the comping forum always is. I personally would never post a comp I found on here becuase of the frequency that people have a go at others for putting up a duplicate thread. I can't get the search feature to find threads I know are there let alone ones I don't know are there or not! Highlighting it's a duplicate is great butthere is quite a vibe of terretorial "we know better than you so get it right" on this board. THe evidence of that is the frequency I see someone post saying "This is the first time I've posted a comp so please don't have a go at me if it's already on here" or words to that effect.

There is also a real habit of ignoring questions posted by newbies, about how to enter specific comps etc.

Don't get me wrong there are a lot of really welcoming members.
All forums will always have an element of frustration for different members but as someone who has posted on a mumber of other forums, please keep the board a welcoming place for newbies!

PS Not aimed at anyone in particular just a general observation so please no one take it personally!

This is why there is a 'read first before posting' bit but the one thing that annoyed me about your the piece I have highlighted, no-body ignores posts by newbies with questions. If it's not answered it's because no-one has seen it, not because they are ignoring it.

Unfortunately I have seen it a number of times. I'm not talking about quesitons that could be answered in the read first section, I'm talking about questions related to specific posts, for example how to get a particular site to work.

But hey only giving my observations and own feelings as to the general vibe on the board as a newer member to it, and I guess it's just been confirmed.

I think most of us will have been registered for a while, as it was posted here more or less when it started. I haven't had any problems - I just go on and get my cards each day & wait for the winning email (a very long wait so far! )

Have you a different email addy you could try with in case you're partly registered and it doesn't like you trying again (IYSWIM)

Thanks CC, I'd tried all 3 emails I have before. Tried 3 different computers as well!

Just tried with different user name & password and it has accepted me!

     All that muckin' about!

Sure I've not tried to register before

Oh well, got me cards for tonight, dunno if I'll stay awake though ;)

it seems like i'm being asked to defend myself here which is exactly what i'm talking about.

I won't post examples because it will then identify individual members who are ignoring other people.

My post was a general discussion about the vibe on the board not just about messages being missed. I accept not all messages are going to be picked up but just wanted to put my own feelings across.

So you like making unsubstantiated claims and expect everyone to take notice of you?

not unsubstantiated claims, just not prepared to turn it into a personal attack towards individuals.

This is exactly what I mean about the treatment newbies get on this board. I don't want people to take notice of me I was following up on earlier posts today about compers needing to remember that everyone was new one.

Think what I have said has been thoroughly proven by the responses i've had. As such I shan't bother posting any more and go back to being a lurker.

Methinks I've opened a can of worms here, and wish I hadn't. I should learn to keep my mouth shut.

I only wanted a pointer as a newbie to getting things right with regard to board etiquette. What's followed since has made wonder whether I even want to be here at ll (I can hear some of the 'well you know what you can do' comments coming.)

The biggest irony in the whole thing is that my question was answered, but having been given the answer I am left to queston the quote I used to ask it. Even as a newbie I've have now (thanks to the answer) worked out that a newbie bumping up a post wont cause you to disqualify yourself from entering a competition by enterng twice if you have hit the thanks button the first time. I think

Dissollusioned, confused and retreating to my corner

    Bagstaff,

please don't feel you've opened up a can of worms. My message was sonething I've wanted to say on here for some time and not had the guts to. Just seemed right to say it today as people were discussing things, but like you thinking it wasn't a good idea. We can retreat to our comping newbie corners together!
