Get some powdered milk and keep it in your room, along with your loo paper. Try to think up meals that are all dried or tinned ingredients so you can store them safely. Does your room have a lock on the door?
It might seem petty but it would bug the hell out of me too. I even get annoyed if my OH uses the last of something and doesn't mention it  .

Try Rightmove and all your local letting agencies, they often have rooms in shared houses to rent out.0

Don't just look at the room in a shared house - meet the prospective housemates, talk to them, even pop out for a drink / stay there for a drink if offered, and see what they're like.
First impressions aren't always accurate, but hopefully you'll get a good idea of whether people are suitable to share with or not.
If housemates are not there at the time, keep searching. I think finding the right housemates, or just considerate ones, is important - don't take a landlord's word for it that the housemates are all great.0
