help - shared house hassles

hi,

Just looking for some opinions as having some trouble living in a rented shared house... i found the house through a site online and the LL seemed nice but new to the game.

I moved in, as did two other tenants at the same time as me ... one a 16 yr college student and a FT worker. The 16yr recently announced she is pregnant and so will be looking to move out when she can get a council house with her bf (who currently is not working and pretty much lives with us). The other is male and works full-time, he is not interested in cleaning, cooking etc and pretyy much does sweet FA unless he can help it.

On friday one of the tenents moved out as he only uses it Monday-Friday and now its summer will be able to commute and still get home while its light. Plus he was sick of the cleanliness issues. Another tenent is also moving out next week as she has a partitioned room with the 16 yr old and seems to want complete silence. Its a bit of 6 of one and 1/2 a dozen here but the relationship broke down completely long ago.

The problems I am having are general cleaning; im the only one who EVER cleans up after myself it seems and theiving - I can't leave loo paper in the toilet (no kitty system and no inclination to set one up here thou I have mentioned it) as it gets stolen, my blackcurrent squash also and my milk etc ... I seem to be funding everyone in this house.

In an ideal world I would like to move out but im worried that this is normal and that I wont find anywhere that will take me. (I rang one agency when searching for this house and she said ring back if still interested when I had a f/t job!). I dont particularly want to be here as the college student finishes here course for the summer and seems to pretty much intend to do what she does on her days off and every weekend ... sit in front of the tv, mess about with her bf etc.

I am around the house a lot due to being a part time student and part-time worker (though I have recently lost my job due to depression/anxiety and am living on JSA). I hope to get another job fairly soon though but I am finding this house is actually causing some of these probs through frustration and their lack of consideration (ie hogging the phone, the bathroom, the tv, the kitchen etc).

Thanks for any input,

Not a solution to your problem but in my early days of renting when I shared a house I used to have similar problems to yourself with people nicking my food and drink. There's a chemical you can buy that's like lactose and works a treat in situations like this. You "plant" your pint of milk in the fridge and put a teaspoonful of this chemical in it and then sit and wait. The person who spends the next 24hrs on the throne is your culprit !

not sure if that would put them off as they would probably put it down to one of their many takeaway meals.

Not all house shares are like this!! I would suggest you look around and find somewhere else to live in a house full of like-minded people who don't mind pulling their weight when it comes to communal living! There seems to be a preston forum that people regularly post on, so might be worth asking on there how to find a decent houseshare! http://www.prestonlancs.com/forum/ Most large towns/cities have websites where people advertise for housemates wanted.

In the mean time, could you suggest the landlady pays for a cleaner?
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Don't you think the penny might finally drop when they realise that all of the local takeaway places are apparently doing dodgy food ..... ?

As a serious answer to your question there isn't anything you can do to resolve the issues other than move out. It's one of the compromises you have to make if you're sharing and as it sounds like this is a student let then to be honest it all sounds about normal.

Why don't you go around a push the J Edgar around a bit?

Why should the landlady pay for dirty sluvs?

its NOT a student let ...

I was very particular about asking about that while checking he was ok with me being part-time student/worker.

    Find another houseshare.

This isn't your first post about having issues in the house, clearly they've not been resolved - regardless of the actions you've taken - and so it's no longer suitable.

Furthermore, you feel that it might be contributing towards your depression, which won't be helping either.

Find somewhere else. Try sites such as uk.easyroommate.com and spareroom.co.uk.

    Good luck.

I'd move out. I wonder if the property is officially declared as an HMO even - and how it stands with that bf moving in.

You don't want to be there when that baby comes either. It'll get worse than it is now.

This isn't the house you wanted, it isn't the house you expected. These are not your sort of people.

When renting it is very important that the people you're sharing with are living your type of lifestyle, so you share similar experiences, issues and expectations.

Look for an established share to move into.
