This sounds more like a debit card that is branded Visa (Debit) and/or Switch/Maestro (MasterCard). Most banks offer this type of card with their account.
Some do give you a credit card subject to status but this is usually a separate account and billed/charged separately and not related to the bank account0 -
Hi James,
That is an interesting question. As far as I can see, we don't seem to have anything like that available now here, although I have looked about a bit myself. My bf is French and he has a mastercard on his current account which seems to function like a debit card with the advantages of credit card (protection from fraud, acceptance where normal debit cards are declined etc). I would also like to know if anyone has some more info on this myself........The best way to forget all your troubles is to wear tight shoes.0 -
The Natwest Premier account sort of works like that, it's a compulsory full DD so you have to pay the balance of in full out of your current account at the end of each month as the credit card is linked to the account but it doesn't come out instantly like a debit card does. The only trouble is, as a banking package, you normally have to pay a monthly fee for the privilege.0

Don't really understand what is meant by "had the protection of a credit card".
By "protection" people usually mean under section 75 of the CCA. The wording of this is very specific, it only applies to credit cards - not debit cards, charge cards or even credit card cheques.
If this card was linked to his current account and limited him to spending what was in that account then it was a debit card not a credit card.
If you wish to have credit card you have to enter into a totally separate agreement with the bank, even though it may be the bank that runs your current account.
Just because a piece of plastic says Visa or Mastercard on it doesn't mean it's a credit card !0 -
your joking, i thought it have given me full protection.i currently have a hsbc maestro card but last year £80 was stolen from my account so i got a hsbc credit card but i've been spending like crazy on that,i got it for the safety of shopping online etc.
so i'm going to transfer my balace to another card but i wanted to open a current account where i could place £100 in then use that when i wanted to buy something online and in shops.
is there anywhere i could get protection when shopping ?0 -

MASTERCARD and VISA branded cards are classed as credit card and give you full protection under Section 75.
Switch, Solo, Maestro and Visa Debit are debit cards and do not give you full protection.
Both are protected for fraudulent transactions if the card issuer agrees they are. So if you had a debit card and there was transactions you are unaware off on there, then query with the bank and they will investigate and may return your money0 -

You are confusing me - and others. As I said previously, just because it says Visa on it doesn't make it a credit card.
Visa and Mastercard are payment systems (owned mainly by the banks) to handle all cards transactions bearing their logo.0 -
You may be referring to HSBC Premier MasterCard?

MasterCard Debit is available, but not here in the UK (yet). But according to a bod at HSBC, they (MasterCard) might be winding down Maestro and using MC-D instead, probably because of the international acceptance factor.0

Yes but Visa debit cards are to have the word DEBIT on them to identify them as a debit card.0
