The problems of waste and conspicous consumption are not new.

25 years ago we were newly married and it was just after Christmas when a colleague of Dhs boasted that he had spent nearly £300 on M and S food for three days over Christmas for three people!!!

He obviously expected us to be impressed! We were - I commented it was an obscene waste of money and DH agreed!

The next day I wanted to test out the food processor I had been given for Christmas and warned DH to be back home on time or it would spoil!

He mentioned that he had to be home and colleague sneered "Oh is Elona cooking something special?"

DH absently mindedly replied "salmon souffle and then pear sorbet in white wine ,I think"

The look of bafflment on colleagues face was a picture!

DH is stunned that we have had a lot of really nice dishes today that are home cooked- onion bhajis, lentil daal, side salad, bombay potatoes, kofta kebabs- for about £5 in total for five people.

I know what you mean about the value situation. I've recently started shopping in Lidl and glad that I do but when my mates come round for dinner and see all my Lidl labels in the cupboard and fridge, they turn their noses up and say they are not eating that cheap muck! I don't notice the difference in taste between brand names and cheap names to be honest.

Mine must be last Saturday when we went shopping at Lidl & the car park was half empty. Did a shop & had to nip to Morrison's to pick up a few bits that they didn't have in Lidl. It's a stonesthrow away & the place was heaving! People are moaning about how pricey food etc. is but they are either too ignorant or too snobby to give the cheaper supermarkets a try! You're right D.I.D., there is no difference in the taste, in fact we have found alot of the food from Lidl/Aldi to be much nicer than the major supermarkets!!

I get REALLY ratty at those who laugh & turn their nose up because I shop at Lidl & buy clothes from charity shops. I hate it EVEN more when they are the same ones that owe me money & make excuses that they cannot afford to repay me.

Especially when its because they spend so much on clothes & going out drinking.

Oh where do I begin...... :D

People who throw food away just because "they don't fancy it"
People who turn their nose up at my buying clothes off e-bay or charity shops.
People who won't use a library for books and instead will buy them from the supermarkets because "going in a library isn't cool" (I kid you not....)
One of my work colleagues who is always moaning she hasn't any money, is in debt and yet buys £80 sandals for work and Gina shoes (she is on, by my estimation, about £17k p.a.). She also has her nails done every week - what's that about? Last week she said she had 12p left to payday and then went out and bought 2 Lancome juciy tubes!! What's wrong with Rimmel/Collection 2000/Avon?
People who live on convenience foods (usually from Marks...)

I need to lie down now......:rotfl:
But I'm going to say this once, and once only, Gene. Stay out of Camberwick Green :D

Didn't read this before I posted. A while ago the wonderful Wayne Hemingway of Red or Dead fame and stalwart supporter of buying clothes from charity shops, was on a TV programme where he cooked his friends (some of whom were obviously quite influential/loaded) a meal based purely on stuff he had got from Aldi. They all raved about it - nuff said. Don't forget as well that he's worth a few bob after selling Red or Dead - a man to whom a statue should be erected if you ask me!!! Poster boy for the Old Style MSEs he is!!!

Thatis similar to what my mate & his OH did at his Mother in Law's 60th. They bought all the buffet food from Lidl & there was hardly any waste!

I had colleague once who got really upset and stressed because she had lost her lipstick at work. The hassle she caused. We couldn't understand it and said - it's only a lipstick for goodness sake - yes, she wailed but it is Chanel and cost a fortune! I remember shortly after going into Boots and buying a No 7 lippy and looking at the price of the Chanel ones at the same time just out of curiosity. I was horrified!
