You aren't going to be able to do anything with this cheque if its in joint names and you don't have a joint account.
A simple letter to the solicitors with a copy of your name change "deed" (they can check with the solicitors that did the name change). Explain the situation and request two cheques in correct names are sent to you and your ex.0 -
Sounds like they have been cleaning up their database and closing files etc for the end of financial year!! You had probably paid the deposit to the solicitors a while before you completed on the house. In that time it would have gained interest and the solicitors have to pay that interest back to you as it was your money. Our dream has come true...0

its not a lot of cash so will see if it has initials on the cheque and may just send it to his parents0 -
Does your original post mean that the new residents are opening your mail - or phoning you rather than just forwarding mail to you?0

If it is in a window envelope the name of the addressee isn't always visible.
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

If mail came to my address after 4 years addressed to the previous owner/occupant I would definitely open it. Any sensible person would do so. I have no wish to pry into someone else's affairs but after 4 years, I would be concerned about identity fraud and wish to nip it in the bud.

he may have only realised when he open the letter and saw the address of the property sold as its not the one he is living in ,not sure he knew my married name as he knew my dad the surname i use now,and his brother married my dads sister so i dont have an issue with him opening it more baffled at a solicotor sending it after 4 years.
right i will explain i sold a house in xx ave, moved into flat in xx lane the address in which he lives and the solicitor knew i lived 4 years ago. i moved out of flat and he moved in from across the road, so it is nothing to do with the adress he lives in hope that helps0 -

In your position, I'd write to the solicitors returning the cheque and asking for it to be re-issued in your name, and your ex-husband's share in his name. As to why you've been sent the money after all these years, I suspect they've had a stringent audit and found that monies that should have gone to clients for interest etc. had never been sent, so are doing it now.Debt at highest: £6,290.72 (14.2.1999)
