Help! Kids cant reach the lights!!! (merged threads)

As my Bathroom light does'nt have that pull cord to switch on but a switch from wall out, My 2 and 5 years olds are unable able to swtch on the light (its either me running up and down the stairs or letting them wee in the dark!)

I just got back from maplins and bought this:

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=32372&doy=20m9D

But to only find out that its not for a two - way switch. Which is what I have.

And I have bought these battery operated push lights which are a load of rubbish because the batteries never last long in it:

http://www.argos.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Search?storeId=10001&catalogId=3801&langId=-1&searchTerms=9828379&go.x=0&go.y=0

Dont think I should DIY to change it to cord as there maybe a safety reason why there was a switch ( There is a round cap in the bathrrom ceiling by the door which looks like there was a pull light there before)
Dont want to get a electrian in as where I am living is only temporary.

Does any one have any suggestions?

I bought my little boy(8) one of these

    http://www.iwantoneofthose.com/search.do?productCode=LAVNAV

He absolutely loves it!! It tells you if the seat is up or down, the only downside that it is battery operated, but we use rechargable ones

    Hope this helps!!

Just a guess: as your swithch is two-way then probably in the past it worked together with the cord switch inside (two-way too). Probably you can restore or replace cord swithch and will be able to operate the light by both switches.

What about one of those little steps used for toilet training ........could they reach then or just leave a light on when it's night time
  • Hi,

If you only have one light switch that turns on and off the light, you can use the switch from maplins!

Only two way lighting systems use three core cable, which goes in common, L1 and L2.

You should turn off the electricity and see how many wires are going into the existing light switch just to be sure.

    1. If there are only two wires then it is a one way system and common and L1 will be used.
2.If it is the first switch on a two way system there will be 5 wires.
    3. If it is the second switch on a two way system there will be three wires!

Please switch off the electric and see how many wires are going into the switch and I will then give you instructions on how to wire the switch from maplins!

The colours of the wires would also be useful!
  • Put an energy saving light bulb in and leave it on all night for them.

  • Hi Guys

Just a word of caution to always follow up any advice like this with your own research, and if in any doubt please use a qualified tradesperson.

Not that we're doubting anyone, but please be safe!

You can tie the end of a bit of string on the childs wrist at night and the other end to the toilet to guide them :) Only kidding, honest :p
