Do I understand this right?
We petition the government to lower duty, whilst still allowing the oil companies to make billions of pounds of profit?
All the recent increases have been made by the oil companies because of the price per barrel of oil. How about we petition them to drop their profit level to give lower prices?
If the government reduced duty, this could impact all the services they provide to all of us. It could lead to cuts in NHS/Police/Armed Forces/Social Security/etc as well as possibly leading to higher taxes elsewhere (the government need money to run the country, and have got to get it from somewhere).
I wont be signing this. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

Fair enough you don't have to sign it. I think the point that's being made is that during this tough time for most people having to pay utility bills, fuel bills etc on top of costs of everyday shopping, the government should step in and help, and a way of doing this would be to reduce the duty on fuel. Britain is the highest taxed country in the EU anyway.0

I thought I saw a list recently that showed the Dutch paid more than we do for petrol (I'm sure we were second on the list).
We could also completely reduce fuel duty, and be like the USA. This would of course mean that if you didn't pay for private health insurance every month (on top of your petrol bill anyway) and got ill. You would possibly have to find thousands of pounds to deal with your illness (much more if you needed an operation). Think of the bigger outcry there would be in this country if the government decided this would be the way forward.
The government have delayed the latest 2P duty increase because of the oil price situation (reducing the additional revenue this would have created). I haven't seen any matching offers from the oil companies in trying to keep the price down yet. I don't understand why people do not focus on the oil companies (that are making record profits), and they only focus on the government on this matter. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

The oil companys are greedy and are passing the buck as to who's to blame for the latest increase, however, people look to the government to help to look after us and as they tax us in every way they possibly can, I don't think it's unreasonable to ask them to reduce taxation and spending at the moment while the economy is unstable.0

This petition is growing really fast! It was just over 35,000 when I checked yesterday and now it's over 43,540. Hopefully the government will listen to the public for a change.0

When fuel prices rises then the VAT income also rises. If the government reduced duty, this could impact all the services they provide to all of us. It could lead to cuts in NHS/Police/Armed Forces/Social Security/etc as well as possibly leading to higher taxes elsewhere (the government need money to run the country, and have got to get it from somewhere).
So a 15p increase in forecourt prices gains 2.62p per liter in VAT. Hence fuel duty could be dropped by about 2p with no change in tax income.Happy chappy0 -

The Governments gets 85p of this and the Olid Company / Refinery / Retailer gets 30p to cover coast and profits.
Now tell me who is greedy? That incompetent in Downing Street, Bubbles Brown, that's who.
Interesting. I didn't realise they got as much as that. Well that only backs up the point that they should reduce the fuel duty, it's ridiculous!:mad:0
