18 year old daughter and her car insurance

Hi everyone

My daughter's renewal premium for her car insurance has just come through at £1850.00 plus another £20 for legal cover. She has 1 years no claims, no driving convictions and has held a full licence for 9 months.

Does anybody think she has a chance of getting a cheaper quote, or does this sound about right?

Hope someone can help :)

My sons quotes are nearly half what he paid in his first year. This is with a years full license and one years no-claims.

I would certainly shop around for a better quote it seems very steep for a second years insurance quote. Its like your own car insurance, your present company doesn't always give you the best deal the following year.

I would seriously recommend Quinn Direct as an insurer. I've held a policy with them now for almost two years and they were hands down the cheapest quote I could find when I was first looking for car insurance. I'm a young driver too (18, male, obviously I want to drive at breakneck speeds into lamp posts) so I was expecting insurance to be high, but Quinn seemed to be at less than half as expensive as the next competitor. For a quote, go to the site directly, a lot of these sites like confused.com give very conflicting quotes, or just ridiculous - my car is 11 years old and group 1 insurance, and one insurer was quoting me £8,800 for a year.

As a young driver I always recommend Elephant.com
Remember to add parents to the policy as named drivers if they are going to use the car...might even knock off a few quid.
Bet match total as of 04/10 = God Knows + About £1000 Quidco. Time for Mrs Huddsta to have a crack!!!

This applies to everyone, not just new/young drivers.

Never ever go with your renewal quote until you have shopped around. If you can't get a better deal then take it but I'm pretty sure that with a little time you can shave a few ££ off the renewal.
We never pay more at renewal time than we did the previous year.

This is because the underwriters don't want to insure you for whatever reason according to the criteria they set and thus provide a extremely high quote. It gets rid of people they don't want to insure.

I've found Confused.com quite good over the last few years and it helps to get a good idea of what insurers are quoting so you don't end up spending hours doing countless indivdual forms only to get a ridiculous quote.

I only use them to get a rough idea of who at the time is providing cheap insurance, I then either go directly to that insurer or check others they missed and make a decision then.

    That is ridiculousy expensive!

DD1's first year's insurance at aged 17 was less than half of this with Tesco. When DD2 started to drive, I went with Admiral on their multicar policy. Last year I paid £1,200 in total for 3 insurance policies; for a brand new 17 yr old driver, me with full no claims and DD1 who had managed to have an at fault accident in the first 4 months of driving.

This year it is cheaper but DD1 picked up 3 points for driving whilst using her mobile  on top of the accident last year. Her policy obviously went up. Admiral gave me a quote for all 3 cars but I asked for a breakdown of each. Then I compared them online and went back and said I wasn't happy with my quote and DD2's quote. They reduced these straight away. I probably could've haggled DD1's quote as well but she was paying for it herself, and I thought it may teach her a lesson to realise her quote had increased by £120 for using her mobile while driving. ;)

Also, as said above, definitely add yourself as a named driver. This does bring the premium down and I do drive both their car's occasionally so it is useful.

Remember that insurance companies will often respond to a little push in the right direction.

I got Diamond down from £911 to under £700 just through a brief negotiation. Not good enough, unfortunately, as Direct Line are £650 (daughter is 17, passed test only last week and is on my insurance).

Remember to ask about Pass Plus. If your daughter takes this, some insurance companies will reduce her premium.
