British Gas Central Heating Care

  • I asked them what the boiler service procedure inspects.This is their email;
Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your email regarding
    the annual maintenance service.

I confirm the service engineer will carry out the following:

    1. Complete a boiler emission test to measure the safety and efficiency of your
    appliance.
    2. Perform basic electrical safety checks.
    3. Check the condition of the appliance and its operation.
    4. Check the condition of the system, including ventilation, flue, pipework,
radiators, controls and air grilles, where appropriate.
    5. Talk you through a detailed checklist of the work done and leave you with a
    copy.

During the Yearly Safety and Maintenance Inspection, our service engineer will
use a performance analyser on your boiler. This is a precision instrument that
enables us to check the efficiency and safe operation of a wide range of gas
central heating boilers. A low reading indicates that the boiler is working
effectively, whilst a higher reading indicates that further investigation is
required and in these circumstances, the engineer would strip down the boiler in
order to clean and repair as required. The performance tester compliments other
checks the engineer will make on the boiler and system.

I trust this has answered your enquiry but if you require any further
assistance, please contact me at engineers@house.co.uk.

    Kind regards

As I mentioned in my earlier post.Complain if you feel you have not had a proper inspection.

    Excellent post!

My experience over a long period with BG sevicing has been first class. Although I don't doubt that some fitters are less than thorough, that hasn't been my experience or that of my friends - and many on this forum.

I doubt it will stop those who seem to have a hatred for BG continuing to knock them.

Let's hope that point 5 on the service email is the bear minimum that a customer should expect. My guess is that some people on here couldn't be bothered to complain and just expect a minimum service.Check all the points
have been done.I should have asked what level of time they would expect an
engineer to take to do these checks properly.30minutes? 60 minutes?Expect some short cuts if he's in an out in no time at all.
I will be running another email off to ask this and report back soon.

Bg were kind enough to advise from their second email as follows:

Thank you for your enquiry regarding the Yearly Safety and Maintenance
    Inspection.

I confirm on average the inspection usually takes approximately 40 minutes. This
could however, be less or more depending on your central heating system.

I trust this answers your enquiry.

    Kind regards

I called them to speak to a supervisor as I had wasted half a day. As usual got transferred to india so obviously no supervisor available.

British Gas do not have any call centre staff in india.
In fact they do not have ANY staff in India at this time.

You would have spoken to an indian/ asian UK based call centre agent based in the Scottish call centre, and it is extremely unfair of you to suggest that the service you recieved was flawed due to this unsubstantiated fact.

The only India based service is ONETEL, which Centrica have just sold.

  • Just had my 1st yearly inspection since having a new boiler and central heating installed. I was at work, but my parents said the engineer only took 10 minutes to do it. No check list left, all I got is a 'work request voucher' with my surname spelt wrong, and some meaningless information on it. Hmmm, I think I'll give them a call.
  • I've still not had a reply to my original email to them...what a bunch of useless muppets!!! I have rung BG up on several ocassions since and no one can answer my query; they have taken a contact number off me about 5 times now promising to ring back the next day. But I keep ending up ringing them. I'm on the phone now, and after explaining my situation they still put me in a queue to wait even longer (28mins as i type)..ooo they've answered!!!

....yet another person who can only take my number...looking forward to a call tomorrow....not. what a bunch of top hats!

The best that can be said for BG is their service is variable. Their CH installations are poor, their customer service is appaling, but their heating cover is good.

Unless the service is always good or always poor it is, by definition, vairiable.

On what evidence do you say their customer service is appaling? Or their CH installations poor?

There are plenty of posts on this forum from satisfied BG customers. Also a poor installation would only make work for BG who have to maintain it - free for the warranty period.
