Bills - setting up new accounts while still packing up in old property?

Hi, I haven't been on here in a while and I also apologise for the confusing sounding thread title (MODS feel free to move this to the correct forum BTW!).

Right, I currently live in a 1 bed council flat above a row of shops and tomorrow, Monday 19th I will sign up for a larger, 3 bed council flat, also above the row of shops.

The new tenancy will begin a week later on Monday 26th September.....

However, as I don't have long to pack up and move, I have been told as long as I pay the full rent on this current flat each week as well as the rent on the new flat, I can keep this flat until it's all packed up and vacated. Follow me? Good :)

Problem being is, I will want gas and electric in the new flat as of 26/9/05, yet also need the gas and electric in *this* flat until for another few weeks.

How the heck do I arrange this with the relevant companies please ?

I get my gas from British Gas, and electric from Powergen and currently pay both of these by monthly direct debits....

The local housing officer told me the power in the new property will be supplied by ScottishElectric (as they have some sort of deal with them), and I'll pay that quarterly when I officially move in.

I have the right to keep my suppliers as British Gas and Powergen, don't I?

Another thing is, I currently have a broadband connection... there *IS* a phone socket in this new flat, but it looks like a really old thin cable and socket, I can't see anywhere on the BT site about getting them to come and install a nice new, modern socket and positioning it in the lounge for me.... the current old socket and cable in this new flat is in the hall and looks very old, trust me.

If ANYONE on these forums can help me, please please please do so ASAP!

Sorry again for sounding so panicky and muddled, I really am :(

Yours,
Rochdale Guy.

Looking forward to moving 5 doors down into a larger flat, but not looking forward to having to arrange all these bill hassles etc :(
