I dont need to kick him - I can think of many other wonderful ways to make him pay!
But - the problem still is, if I dont upgrade, then my connection will be reduced to 128kb - I'm on platinum (for what its worth......) Actually - scrub that thought, I don't think I will notice the difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotfl:
I am debating whether or not to risk having another go...........0 -

Dear AOL Broadband member
Please do not ignore – your action is required
To avoid a decrease in your connection speed, please
switch immediately to the new network
Important information
We have written to you before to let you know that the network you are currently using for AOL Broadband will be phased out and that you need to upgrade to a new network. The phasing-out will start from 26 September, with the connection speed being lowered to just 128K.
You have not yet upgraded to the new, enhanced network. In order to avoid this reduction in speed and to ensure that you remain at your current connection speed, please change immediately to the new network.
Below are all the details you need to carry out this upgrade.
Print a copy of this email for your reference - it contains important information that will help you with the upgrade process.
What do I need to do?
Please follow the instructions below, starting with clicking on ‘Upgrade Now’, to download the necessary updates quickly and easily. You will also find out more information about what the update involves and how the download process works.
Please note if you interrupt the upgrade process it will cause connection issues.
What must I do to benefit from the new broadband network?
You need to download new drivers by following the six steps below:
1. Click Upgrade Now. The process will take approximately 10 - 15 minutes over an AOL Broadband (512Kbps) connection. The download will now begin.
2. Once the download has finished, you will need to close AOL.
3. Locate the downloaded file and “double click” it to run the installation.
4. Please read the license agreement and then click the license agreement box to record your agreement. The upgrade installation will now begin.
5. Do not attempt to interrupt the upgrade installation process by restarting AOL. Wait until you see the AOL Sign-On Screen again before attempting to go online. If you interrupt the process, you risk breaking your connection.
6. When the upgrade installation has finished, you should restart AOL. You will see the Sign-On Screen again. It is now safe to sign on to AOL again, in the normal way.
Will I notice anything different when I have downloaded the new drivers?
Once the update has been completed, you will be accessing AOL via our new broadband network, which we hope will provide an enhanced experience. This will be at your existing connection speed (and not the lower speed of 128K on the old network, which comes into effect on 26 September).
Troubleshooting (please retain for future reference)
The information below is to assist you in resolving any problems you may encounter after the update has been completed.
If you find that you are unable to sign on again after the update, please try the following steps:
1. Click Start, then Control Panel, and open the System icon (if it is not visible, click Switch to classic view).
2. In System, click the Hardware tab at the top, and then click the Device Manager button.
3. In the Device Manager list of devices, click the + sign next to Network Adapters.
4. Right-click on GlobeSpan USB ADSL WAN Modem and click Enable.
5. Close all open screens and restart AOL again.
6. Once AOL opens, click Start - Control Panel - Add/Remove Programs.
7. Locate and select AOL Connectivity Services.
8. Click Change/Remove and choose Repair AOL Connectivity Service.
9. Click OK and restart AOL.
10. Set up AOL locations by clicking Sign On and following the on-screen instructions.
If you need to find this email at a later time and you are not online, then do the following:
Select File, then choose Emails Saved on My PC (Filing Cabinet).
Click on the Manage Email tab and select Saved on My PC.
Select the Incoming/Saved Email.
Double-click the appropriate email.
Please carry out this upgrade urgently. The existing network you are using is starting to be phased out and from 26 September will be at the slow connection speed of just 128K. If you do not upgrade before 26 September, you may experience interruption and slowness to your broadband service.
Kind regards
AOL Tech Support
P.S. You may also receive a message on screen when you sign on to AOL, which will also enable you to download the necessary updates.

i'm on dialup with aol.... got the pop up message yesterday saying needed to download etc etc ... started doing it ... said it would take 90 minutes ... then thought... was this genuine?? ... why didn't they send an email explaining it?? etc ... started to think it might be a scam ... so stopped the download .
got onto aol live help... 35 minute wait ... they advised me that it had been sent to me by mistake .. wasn't relevant and i didn't need to do anything .
presume they're right ... unless anyone tells me otherwise !!!0 -

I'm hearing this is about a modem update required for certain broadband modems but that lots of people it doesn't apply to are getting the message no-matter how they connect.
I read someone suggest it was because AOL were changing from PPPoA/VC to PPPoE/LLC
Anyone know?
Those of us with routers would have to change our settings0 -
