I think that there are always ways of keeping your animals and alyth you sound as if you have a real bond with your pets so my advice would be to just call as many rental places as possible and explain your situation, we are renting with four cats and had SOME trouble finding a place but not a huge amount (some Estate Agents wouldn't even ASK the landlord their stance on pets and just put "no pets" on all their adverts!)

If you offer an additional deposit for the dog and cats some LLs may consider you, I think its probably a case of LLs and EAs having a tenant horror story in the past and thinking all pet owners let their pets run riot. Our tenancy agreement states that we will be responsible for any damage caused by the cats, which is fair enough :)

Good luck with keeping your pets

I can put only my side to this story.
    .

You poor soul. I really commend you for putting your responsibility to your animals first before your emotional needs, that IMHO is good ownership (I really was not going to post again on this thread but I really wanted to commend you). May I recommend looking at dogpages.co.uk for your rottie to find a good home and I'm sure someone might know of something suitable for your cats. Your house might be on the market for a while, but having plans may help you feel more assured in your decisions. Of course I will be hoing it doesn't come to that and you are able to rent smewhere you can take them.

(Also, as I HAVE posted despite biting tongue, cats are indeed obligate carnivores but dogs are, while carniverous are scavengers. Domestic dog has evolved in it nutritional requirements considerably from the wolf and requires fewer calories. The modern theories of dog domestication are very different to that of cats and very interesting and makes much of this discussion irrelevant. . Ultimately I haven't said any of this before now because it doesn't really impact on the heartache of these animals and their people.)

the biggest problem is that the dog and cats don't get on, never have and never will. I'm going to see the most perfect place tomorrow and I will ask if I can take my dog. I actually work in property, and we had a guy (who I knew personally) take on a property on one of our estates- he came in to sign the lease and I rather stupidly said "oh, is he taking his two rotties to xxxxx estate". Cue massive shouts in the office, and my rottie's a girl so not massive, these two are males and sodding massive! In the end he signed the agreement, moved in and everything is fine - so I will do the most damnest thing I can do in the world to keep my hound!

I posted only only to put my point across that there are two sides to everything I get calls from people wanting to rent with animals and on some of our estates are told to bin anyone with pets - that's mainly due to livestock issues, the cottage being near to a field of cows, etc. When I moved from the previous house I was able to leave the feral cat that I had fed for years with the new owners, I doubt if that can happen with my cats in this house, but please know that I will do everything I can in my power to keep my dog - as I said, she's my lifeline, she makes me get up, put makeup on, and face the world at the moment!

And what about when you're not around?

Eh? Are you predicting my untimely demise?!

Or do you mean when I'm working? Because if you are referring to that, then when I'm 'at work', the basset is invariably curled up under the table with me. Or if you mean when I'm off gallivanting, she's having a jolly old time in her 2nd home in the country (don't you know) with my Mum.

What a silly argument this is.
  • I'm sorry - but you could still keep your pets - why would you even tell a landlord about the dog? Our neighbours have a dog and have had for the last 9-months, even though the rental agreement specifically states they can't. Personally I would never rehome any of my pets, but I guess that's better than just dumping them onto a charity. I don't understand anyone giving away their animals, but that's probably just me!

If you want to keep your pet either find a LL in agreement or buy your own house. Had you considered that keeping a pet may even place the LL in breach of his lease?

I have a friend in rented with a cat (not allowed!). Whenever the LL or similar comes round the cat just happens to have paid a visit (as longs the bowls are hidden!) - nobody seems to have twigged it's hers as they do tend to choose their company!
