Abandoned! Are Britain's pets the latest victims of the credit crunch?

" Britain's economic woes are forcing people to abandon animals in unprecedented numbers as desperate families struggle to cut costs by dumping their pets.Animal sanctuaries say they have been overwhelmed by the number of animals delivered to them in recent months as the credit crunch continues to bite and the cost of living rises sharply. Another sad side to the credit crunch.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

Yes, we've been hearing the same from US for a while now, it was inevitable here, very, very sadly.

Yes, i read about the same scenario in the States recently. But IIRC they are abandoning their pets due to being repossesed rather then the lack of day to day living expenses.

UK a nation of animal lovers?

No, as far as I am aware the picture is similar to us, yes increasing reposession but also fuel price increases etc etc driving people close to the wall. (There are also added complications in US with things like horses because of recent abbatoir closures and difficulty with issues of horse slaughter) so there are a lot of animals on the edge for security, financial as well as welfare issues right now.

I saw the article on the news tonight - the fact is there has always been lots of cats going to animal charities at this time of the year!

Some might be of the present situation but not on the scale they are saying about.

Quite often on repo's, cats will just be turfed out if the owner can't take them when they are evicted. Dogs are usually taken by the dog warden. Sad state of affairs.

I have just read this article:-

Border collie pup who was thrown down a rubbish chute: Clyde, eight weeks old,

Lets hope the Police catch up with the previous owner and give this Ba**ard the full force of the law.

I was speaking to a volunteer behaviourist for one of the rescue kennels and she said that because of rising cost in petrol, she was unable to go to the kennels every week. One of the kennel maids from the same kennels has also had to leave and get a better paid job, as she can't afford to run her house otherwise.

It's really really sad actually. How anyone can just abandon a defenceless animal and leave it to fend for itself is beyond me. What have they done wrong !!!!!!?:angry::cry:

Animal neglect/cruelty is one thing that really gets my blood boiling.

Agreed ... only been in 4 'punchups' in my adult life and all four were cases where I caught someone kicking/punching/etc a cat or dog that just happened to be sleeping nearby. One of those (stray cat) was even inside a pub and the bouncer (publican's son) upon coming over to chuck me out but then hearing why I'd laid the other bloke out ended up picking up the tab and summarily barred the muppet
