You have to feel sorry for removal firms right now

Ok, my first quote came through - £850+VAT for full packaging and move. It is about 120 miles and we have 3 bed end-terrace (4 years old).
One company (Pickfords) gave indicative quote over the phone and didn't bother coming in - they said it would cost £1700 - £2250 for us to be moved. They said they would struggle to move us next week (Thursday or Friday - fingers crossed!!!!)
Third company just left the house after the inspection and I expect them to tell me the price tomorrow. Fourth company will be here tomorrow night.Spring into Spring 2015 - 0.7/12lb0

You'd be surprised. I think for many its a time thing, a professional firm can empty a property in a few hours while people doing it themselves will take all day. By going for the quicker option they can avoid awkward questions from the neighbours and their stuff goes straight into storage.0

But this guy seems to be thinking ahead of the bubbles... he moved from construction into removals, now removals into recycling.
 Hope he makes a fortune.0

I've never really understood the British mentality of wanting others to fail.
BTW I got the job I was going for. 3 interviews (totalling almost 6 hours), 4 references and several sleepless nights and I'm there. Just need to get the paperwork sorted. Oh and I got a very nice surprise in the contract negotiations - I'm being made a partner at the new place.0

Congratulations on your new job!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

Talking of being adaptable and ready to change - a neighbour of the mil is a surveyer and last disaster - 1990's - his firm went under, work just stopped. He went straight into alternative mode and started gardening. This he built up into a thriving business, he also started other small things - I think one was engraving registration marks onto car windows - and built those into thriving businesses. One went on to be a successful franchise.
It is the most adaptable who succeed.0

It's not possible for everybody, but I found two cheaper ways to do it for some in appropriate circumstances:Ok, my first quote came through - £850+VAT for full packaging and move.

 - move on a weekday. Thu/Fri are the removals' busiest days. Find out if there's a day of the week they can do it cheaper. If you can get your chain to all agree to a Tue/Wed move it can save everybody money. Obviously this is easier to achieve on very short chains.
 - if your stuff is in storage and you want it out, let them bring it when they're in the area. I had two storage containers once and did this, they call it a part load, I let them tell me when they'd deliver it. What they do is fit your containers onto what would have been their empty return journey from a job, they'll bring it then and it's cheaper. But you have to fit in with their timescales and it can be a couple of weeks before you get your stuff. It might also come on different days if you've got a lot. They tend to part-load things only 1-2 containers at a time0

Well done you.... I think you need an assistant though. So when you're in post give me a shout.I've never really understood the British mentality of wanting others to fail.

Thanks everyone. The new job is really good.
fc123 - I meant in general, not to imply that you were hoping he'd fail.
PasturesNew - I've already got 2 assistants at this new place. I don't know what to do with them (no sniggering at the back please) let alone a third one! It's a shame as that's my kind of CV.0
