You have to feel sorry for removal firms right now

Saw this on the news the other day:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7409360.stm

usually do 80-90 removals per week, now down to 10-20  . That is a hefty drop in business!!

Not only that, but they are of course getting hammered by increased fuel prices.

That isnt any proof that prices are going down or will go down, but is certainly proof that house sales have fallen on their @ss.

Van hire is cheaper than paying for a removal van. When people are skint they'll turn to the cheaper options.

I assume repossessions don't go out in expensive removal vans either.

The company who did our move a couple of weeks ago said something similar. They also said that they were moving a lot more people into rental, so a lot are selling with no chain like we did.
  • This sounds good news for those moving house - maybe we'll be able to barter some companies down a bit for guaranteed business? Or not...

Recent quote was over a grand for Swindon to Staffordshire!

Well, we are just trying to get some quotes and 2 companies are coming tonight to have a look at what is there to move in our house. Willsee what the quotes will ne like - it is a job relocation move, so I am telling them that we have to go with the cheapest. When we got initial numbers back in January they started at £600 for ~120 miles move. With packaging....

But this guy seems to be thinking ahead of the bubbles... he moved from construction into removals, now removals into recycling.

    I've been Money Tipped!
The guy who runs where we keep our stuff in storage said he is now full and applying to create more storage space. They do 'budget removals' too, and says he is ONLY getting booke to bring stuff into storage now, and that its people downsizing but not getting rid of stuff or moving into rented (and then made a cheeky jibe about returning to live with parents knowing my situation ;))

When we moved recently we struggled to get a removal company that could do the move on the day we wanted. No idea how much it cost as OH's work paid them directly. They said they were still doing lots of removals I guess people are still moving even if they aren't homebuyers.

There was an interview with someone from the "guild of removal companies" or some such on R4 morning news earlier in the week.

Yes , we have a removal company , and its very quiet ...........seems to be plenty of people out there doing the moves for very little money , that keeps the cashflow ticking along , but of course long term its not good . Luckily we have general transport and storage as a back up, but its still worrying
