I'm using a laptop right now so I've tried to put emphasis on new programs I haven't tried or lighter software wherever possible.
Wherever possible I've linked to download.com so people can read reviews but it's probalby best to go to the website to make sure you get the latest version
Bigfix because windows update doesn't seem to like this laptop and gets stuck while bigfix works instantly
Nvu
OpenOffice
Truecrypt
Audacity
Belarc Adviser
Fresh UI
Trillian
CCleaner
Irfanview
For a paint program, I've always used Serif but now I'm trying paint.net which will apparently replace MS Paint in the future (I'd try v2.1b here in the Stable sections - the 26.4 MB version of 2.1b has .NET included if you haven't downloaded that already). It is much easier to use than most paint programs as it's much like MS Paint in some respects.0 -
I also really highly recommend IESpyad (tutorial post #2 here) which puts a huge list of dodgy sites on your IE Restricted Zone - saved me from spyware a few times.
TinyResMeter is kinda cool. Acts like a widget but doesn't need any installation or additional software.
And I love trying out the progs at www.tinyapps.org - I like the one's that don't require installation and just run from the desktop0 -

Excellent selection of freeware here. The majority of it has reviewers comments etc. Very useful... I've found.

Net Transport isn't free software though, it's shareware.
If you want to purchase it, it's about £13.0
