Thought i'd start this thread to compile a list of easy to use, good quality free software - recommended by mse users.

Audacity - Audio editor and recorded

OpenOffice.org - Word, Databse, Excel (equivalent)- great if you dont have ms Office

Please add you recommendations

Edit: Thanks for the posts so far. However if we try and keep away from the 'protect you pc' (virus, firewall etc) as there are a number of theads about them already.

irfanview - excellent free image viewer with resize, crop, effects options etc handles pretty much every file type and will even play video files now iirc

winamp - nice, reskinnable music / video player that allows you to add codecs and such

sygate personal firewall

filezilla - simple and effective ftp client

motherboard monitor 5 (mbm5) - excellent way of monitoring internal temps and fans etc

dBpowerAMP music converter - quick and easy way to convert between WAV, MP3 and AAC

Bysoft Network Monitor - used this when i switched to a capped broadband deal, i had no idea how much data i was transferring and so kept this open for a few days to get an idea!

Hijack This - allows you to see whats running on your system or rather what should not be.

a2 - Free anti trojan remover

Clean Up - similar to CCleaner

RegCleaner - does what is says

Eraser - cleans away files so they cannot be retrieved

Darksun

Filzip, free alternative to Winzip and Winrar (7zip is also good, but I don't like the interface)

Deepburner, CD/DVD burner, the free version is great, and there's a pro version that gives extra features for good value

The GIMP, fully features image editing software

Winamp - Best media play imo, if you're looking for something a bit lighter try foobar2000
