Hi randomer,
I use whatever washing powder is on offer split 50/50 with soda crystals and find the result better than washing powder alone.
There is an existing thread discussing the virtues of washing powder versus washing liquid and tablets that should help so I've added your thread to it to keep the opinions together.

Posted a similar message in another forum but its probably more appropriate here. We have always used normal washing powder in the past but having just got a new washing machine, has made me think again about what we clean our clothes with. For example you can buy the following versions of Persil. Which is best? Some used together or on their own? Or is it just a big marketing ploy and they all basically do the same thing?
Power
Liquigel
Gel Tablets
Liquid Capsules0 -
Hi humfer,
I have always used 50% washing powder and 50% soda crystals with good results but I got a new machine recently which is cold fill as opposed to the old one which filled with hot and cold water and find on some washes the powder is not dissolving as well as it could, so I'm thinking of changing to a liquid.
There is a discussion on the merits of powder versus liquids on this thread that may help:
Washing powder v liquid or tablets
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the recommendations together.

Go to www.which.co.uk and type in washing powder and you'll see some comparisons.Debt-free day: 8th May 2015 "Remember that sometimes not getting what you want is a wonderful stroke of luck," Dalai Llama0

I have a cold fill WM and find liquids definitely dissolve better, although TBH have generally always preferred liquids. I find Bold and Ariel work better than any other and would pay more for them over the cheaper ones! I don't use the full recommended dose very often though, and often only use half the recommended amount on a full load.

We've got to a point where it can't be improved upon so how are manufacturers going to compete? Answer- change the form of the washing powder, make it sound 'new and improved' and we'll start worrying about which one is better.
It's the same with almost anything you care to mention from breakfast cereals to tampons to bottles of water to pet food to mobile phones.0 -
I am a bit of a lurker on the UKWhitegoods forums and the engineers on there always recommend basic powder
There is an article on liquid detergents here http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=43
and also a general breakdown of what to do to prolong the life of your washing machine AND your clothes http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=114
and an interesting article on soapnuts/ecoballs and the like http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=2020 -

Hadn't seen the ecoball/soap nut one though - interesting. Must say, when I tried the ecoballs a few years ago, I wasn't impressed, so went back to using powder. They were OK with darks (that don't show up stains}. But whites/lights, forget about it.
I tend to use powder most of the time. Only time I use liquid is when I see a good offer.0 -
Thought I'd ask this question here as I wasn't to sure of where to post it.
I have noticed that washing machine detergent tablets are cheaper than the liquid capules. I have no idea for the reason behind this. Or what the difference actually is.
Does anyone know why they are more expensive and they do different?
Thankyou
