Free file encryption software?

Unless a piece of software is Open Source you have to put your faith in its creater that there are no backdoors or vulnerabilities. It might be encrypting your data with the most powerful cipher ever invented, but you're still having to trust that things are being done correctly.
Even if it is open source, most people will just download the installer and install it. They won't check the source code, or compile it themselves.
There's no 100% guarantee that what you're installing matches the source. Hopefully in almost all cases it will, but you never know for certain.Stompa0 -
So do people think they can recover a WinZip password, say 8-10 characters ??Blacksheep1979 wrote: »yes brute forcing takes a while, thats why smart people don't do it and either use dictionary based attacks, hash tables (if you can extract the password hash) or some fundamental flaw in the process (as is the case with winzip)

Wow, you really have been ignoring my posts. How many times do I have to mention the prevalence of winzip password recovery tools? It's an industry in itself. These aren't mythical unicorns and I'm not making them up, just google for yourself."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Whether they work & how easy it is, is another matter.

Do any of you Axcrypt users know whether it's convenient to use with a usb pen drive?another vote for Axcrypt
I was thinking of having the program on the drive, probably with a different file name and extension with encrypted files, so that the files can be used on any pc that does not necessarily have Axcrypt.0 -

Aye.. it will allow you to create a self-decrypting exe.Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication - Leonardo Da Vinci0 -
Hi,
If you are really good, or bad as the case may be, you can crack password protection by substitution.
Using an hex editor repalce the hash for that of a known value.

I have no interest in recovering winzip passwords. I make absolutely no claim whatsoever how easy it would be for me to do. It's how easy others would find it that's the whole point for me not using it, not to mention a huge waste of money (considering this is a money saving website) when you can use freeware apps that specifically cater to encryption. I don't even have winzip installed at all even for my compression/decompression needs. Why pay for something that you can get for free.
I have no interest in writing viruses either, that doesn't mean they can't be written, even relatively easily by script kiddies etc."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Number of people have said that the WinZip encryption is "weak" & therefore it should be easy/straightforward to recover the password, showing how useless it is.
I'm curious to put this to the test as a challenge.
Anyone ??
