Baby clothes and sizes

I've had 2 (now both at school, thank God for school uniforms!) and I would recommend buying stuff ONLY in cotton jersey, and only with poppers. No buttons at all. Sleepsuits and rompers are by far the most practical thing - don't ride up, you can access the nappy area quickly, and they are v comfortable - baby doesn't need socks that can be lost at the first wiggle, and you can always put warmer clothes over the top of a sleepsuit if they get cold. And, when baby gets a bit bigger and you're feeling really skint, you can cut the feet out of the sleepsuits and get another month's wear out of them. The thing I found invaluable for my dear kids were 2 thin cotton jersey blankets about 1 metre square(they were sent by a friend from the US but I'm sure you can find something similar, or even make them) - used them as blankets, cuddlies, burp cloths, and even in one case an emergency nappy. Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you do criticise him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes.0

I have found that babies clothes sizing in France is considerably smaller than many UK stores - anything from Verbaudet I have found does not last the full age range for my "average" son (now two). Similarly gifts from friends in France have the same problem. On the other hand, I found Tesco/George stuff a more generous fit. Also bought some sale stuff from Debenhams for my son to grow into - big mistake - the jeans I got will be too short by the time they fit him round the waist.
And it all varies by child as well...both mine were born weighing 8lbs exactly, but two month old daughter is already into 3-6 month clothing, whereas son was on the smaller side.
The advice given re plain stretch and grows is excellent - at least until you know how much you will be given and how big your little darling will be. We bought a pack of three newborn stretch and grows from Woolworths and used them for both babies for a couple of weeks.0 -
As with everyone else, you're likely to get plenty of newborn outfits, so go for next size up. You will only need the basics until the goodies start coming in i.e 3/4 white babygros and the same for vests.
Also, if anyone asks what you'd like, why not suggest nappies of teh stage 2 variety, cos newborn napps get grown out of pretty fast.
Good lkuckI ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.
Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.0 -

I found that people bought really inappropriate outfits for me
I had my last baby in January but was bought 3-6 mths winter stuff which only fitted her in summer (jumpers with snowflakes on!) and had been bought newborn summer stuff (sleeveless rompers). I also had an abundance of frilly dresses which were useless on the school run in the snow.
I would say... buy a pack of newborn white sleepsuits, a pack of 0-3 sleepsuits, a pack of newborn white vests, a pack of 0-3 white vests, an all in one 'outside' suit (0-3) and a blanket. It's really all you need for now.
It's tempting to buy lots of clothes now in preparation but when baby is about a week old you'll be itching to go out and buy stuff (:D) so wait until then, see what the weather's like and see what baby needs.
Don't forget that supermarkets are open 24 hours now so If you run out of anything you can send hubby to stock up anytime. If you fill up a cupboard of newborn stuff and your baby is 9lb you'll end up with a cupboard full of unworn clothes. So just get the basics, remember which shop sells what, and send hubby out for more stuff once baby comes along.Just run, run and keep on running!0 -
1 pack is fine as long as your baby is not sicky or u will be washing once a day with only 1 pack of suits LOL. see which fit when baby born then send daddy to matalan/asda/resco for more!! he will be glad to feel useful.Cleaning the house while children are growing is like shovelling snow when it's still snowing!0

i was given inappropriate clothes too. he was born july 29th in blistering heat but the shops had put their winter ranges out already and people bought newborn winter clothes. even people who'd had a baby recently. needless to say he didn't wear any of them. two people bought packs of vests, he wore those, nothing else apart from socks. people bought him socks in newborn size but he needed 3-5 size. mum got him winter clothes in 3-6 for october-december, not a chance he was in 6-9 at 7 weeks old. you really can't tell how big your baby will be or how fast the growth will be. vests are always useful though.52% tight0

I love this thread, as it reminds me that I'm not the only one with a big bruiser boy!
We got given hardly any 0-3 clothes as he was 10lb 12oz at birth, so I had to send OH to Tesco for sleepsuits. They lasted 6 weeks, so I'm glad I didn't give in to temptation and buy more.
He is in all his smart 3-6 gear now, and it's lovely dressing him in something groovy every morning.0 -
aww he's sweet! i'll have to work out how to zoom in on my photo, my baby's got a big gummy grin in it :-)
a checkout girl in asda was amazed that roo was only 11 weeks, i was buying hallowe'en t-shirts ('i'm a little pumpkin' and 'i love my mummy') in 6-9 and it turns out that her 11 month old weighs the same as roo! i found out the clothes that my son wore on his 1st birthday and the shirt is too tight on roo now, i wonder when he'll overtake his brother, i bet he'll be going on the rides at alton towers first lol!52% tight0 -
I think clothes sizes are so bad as well, especially as we use washable nappies, trousers are just a no no. Tabs is in 0-3, 3-6 &6-9 stuff depending on the make, today she is in 0-3 vest with 3-6 all in one over. She is 6 months this week.WW Gold Member, trying to maintain !!!Hayden born July 07Tabitha born April 05Poppy born July 030
