Baby clothes and sizes

Would really appreciate some guidance on what size clothes to be buying for Bump when he/she pops out early next year.

Is it really worth buying 'newborn' or just going for the next size? What quantities and type of clothes have you bought? What have you advised family and friends to buy?

Thanks in advance,

JTx

  • You might find that you get loads of 'new born' stuff as presents, so buy 3-6 months. If you find yourself short of the right size, childrenswear retailers are usually happy to exchange.

  • I know what you mean. My first baby is due in 7 weeks time and as I've got quite a big bump, I assumed I was having a big baby so didn't bother with "newborn" clothes and bought 0-3 months instead. But midwife said baby is normal size and that it's just fluid making me look big - so I bought some mixed bundles of newborn clothing (vests, sleepsuits, rompers and a few outfits) off Ebay, which worked out very cheaply for me and the quality was really good.

They say that a fair indicator of the size of your baby is the size of the parents when they were born...

I agree with DaisyNelson - you usually get given loads of new born. I found that alot of my new born ended up as never worn! I would suggest making sure you've got a few vests and sleep suits, as i found for the first few weeks that was about all baby wore - except for a cardigan or coat and hat over the top on the rare occasion i was organised enough to get out of the house during the first few weeks.
I wouldn't buy much though, as you can always buy more afterwards if you need to...
    Good luck!

Buy White and only babygros at newborn!

Easy to wash, no seperating and easy to dress them. You'll find that others will buy the fancy nice stuff.

Also, try ebay for baby bundles - they are mega cheap there, and tend to get more expensive on ebay as they get older, but mine is 3.5 and I still do the bundles. I wont pay more than £30 inc delivery for a bundle of clothes, new or second hand.

No one bought me any newborn stuff at all, everyone bought 3-6 months which meant that I had to send hubby out to buy newborn sizes the week Spud was born (he was over 9lbs but 0-3 months stuff was all much too big) and we have a ton of stuff in 3-6 month sizes:rolleyes:.
You may find people ask you what you want for your bump, if so try & assign sizes to people, ask one to get birth size, one to get 0-3 months etc. If they leave tags attached you can always exchange stuff you don't use. Your midwife may be able to give you an idea of bumps size nearer the brith but don't place to much relicance on the accuracy!

  • my daughter was 9lb 10 ounces and 0-3 months was too small for her , she was too long (67cm)
Most pressies you get given have labels on anycase and shops are pretty good at exchanging. I will never beolief another midwife on guessing babys size, Ive never known one get it right yet !! they tell you want you want to hear. (yes it'll be small it wont hurt ..etc !!! good luck !!

No one brought me any newborn clothes.

My little boy was 9lb10 too so when everyone found that out they brought us 3-6 months.

Newborn clothes will be no good at all if you have a slightly bigger baby
Give me the boy until he's seven and i'll give you the man.
  • Newborn clothes didn't fit our daughter either - 0-3 months were fine but even they only lasted a month or so. I just bought one pack of white bodysuits before she was born and we were given a few second hand bits, am overdue my second baby now and have just got the bodysuits and 4 or 5 sleepsuits in 0-3 from first baby and think that'll be enough.
  • our first baby was 7lb 2oz and was in newborn size for 6 weeks
our second baby was 8lb 13 oz and was in newborn size for 2 weeks

Better have some newborn stuff in! As a previous poster said, the midwives rarely get it right - one told me that our second was going to be 'a thin little thing'!!!

    Have fun buying...

I'd go 0-3 months. It doesn't matter if they are a little bit big so you get more wear out of them.

My DD 9lb (long and thin) so needed length of 0-3. Everyone bought me 3-6 as she they thought she was a big baby. However she didn't put on weight very quickly and grew steadly. By 8 weeks only put on 1.5lb from birth weight. Doesn't sound much but luckily I had a fab HV who told me to ignore weight gain (unless excessive) and to just monitor alertness. I just changed or got credit notes for most of the outfits.

Because she grew steadily I could judge what size she would be wearing next summer/winter etc and snapped up loads of bargains in Next sale :)

I would also buy in somewhere like M&S or Next (easy to xchange) 1 pink and 1 blue romper. You can take back the one you don't need and it's so nice to see them in their 'proper colour' suit on the first day. After that clean will do ;)
