  • When I see these appalling people in the supermarket, with trolley loads of junk for their hideous spoilt brats, I absolutely cringe. _ Mr Smartprice

I completely agree wiht you!!! I work at morisson's on the weekend for extra cash, and Saturdays are EVIL!!! Kids shouting "I WANT THAT ONE!" and kicking and screaming cos parents said no is making me deaf. Also, you dont realise until you work in a supermartket how much junk and different type of yoghurt, rice pudding, healthy drinks, etc there is on the market. I rarely see anyone buying the Bettabuy range or even the Morrison's range. They all buy brand names, ready meals, etc... And then they all wonder why the food bill is expensive, if they even look at it! i dread to say that but one must be a tad silly to shop at Morrison's (well, i am silly cos I shop there for topping up stuff I cant find in LIDL and because it is practical): no clubcard, no loyalty scheme, pitiful reductions on reduced to clear items (got 12 white rolls for 7p in LIDL, M's were reduced from 69p to 39p).

But the aim is not to trash Morrison's nor the people who buy the over marketed crap. The thread is about being obsessed. I am obsessed too: I have created a food planner for a month, I always go round the freebies section, I have bought so many stuff at reduced prices thanks to this site, and I always go to the reduced to clear section first when i go shopping. i would check the electricity meter too if I was paying for it ( but I dont).

I think no one can be as bad as my mom, who used to heat the house at 17 degrees in the winter, leaving us with frozen toes, hands and noses, and ice cold beds. She was putting kitchen towels in the vent slits above the double glazed windows along with sello tape to keep the cold air out... If that is not obsessed!

I'm certainly obsessed - I work about 1 minute's drive from a large Asda and pop in at least once a day, and I often call into Tesco Extra or Sainsbury's on the way home. When I'm there, I have regular routes around the store that takes me past all the reduced items and I feel quite panicked if there is another person beating me to the bargains. The result of this is that I won't need to buy coffee, shampoo, bath foam, shower gel etc etc for the next decade, and my family think it's hysterical to joke about 'Mum's toilet roll mountain'.

I have to go, now - I need to check this morning's bargains.

Madfrenchgirl is right - Saturdays are hell in any supermarket. Tuesdays are the best, I reckon. Although I went into Asda the other Saturday at 7.00 am after taking some friends to the airport. It was great - not a scuzzy kid in sight!

On the subject of Morrisons, don't be too critical. I go once or twice a month as they have a good range of BOGOFs. And their pies are good, especially the balti ones! I use all the supermarkets for different purposes at different times. Asda for everyday, Tesco for freebies & wines, Sainsburys for BOGOF wines, etc. And I always check the "benefit buffets" so maybe I am obsessed. But I don't half save some dosh!

I agree, Morrisons is the ONLY supermarket I can use at the moment which doesn't 'do my head in'. I know I've got a funny head, but the acoustics in ALL the others reduce me to a jibbering wreck within 5 minutes. I don't know what it is about Morrisons - it's a new store, nice wide aisles - but I've been into a couple of Asdas lately and come out feeling really ill, without even trying to do a 'full shop'.
Signature removed for peace of mind
  • well, I was not very criticising them... dont want the company to go bust, would like to stay there for a bit... LOL

I must admit the reason why I decided to work for them at 5.39 an hour instead of LIDL at 6 an hour was because the staff in LIDL are either not there or never helpful (not their fault, I know they apply very restrictive assessment criteria). And I must admit that the people at Morrison's will always be happy to help you and take you to the aisle you are looking for while in ASDA they tend to mumble "not my aisle". Even worse, you can find a shelf in ASDA but nohting will be there. Morrison's tends to be a bit more effective when it comes to availability. no too sure about TESCO.

But I must admit that working in a supermarket helps spotting the BOGOF you need: OH needed some cereals for the morning and there was 2 packs of 24 weetabix for 2 punds, quick call to OH and 1/2 hour later they were in the trunck.

  • Im sure my OH & DD get sick of me going on about money saving all the time and everytime we have a meal-I tell them roughly what it cost :p i cant help it...im obsessed!!!!! They tell me to shut up...why??? They should be happy

For instance..yesterday DD said that her friends mum and dad take her to a calvery every sunday-why cant we go to one  Cheapest carvery around here I have seen advertised is £8.99 each-half price for kids (£22.50 just on main meal roughly). So when I dished up Sunday roast yesterday: Roast chicken, roast spuds, mash, yorkshires, stuffing, sweetcorn, sprouts and gravy....I said this is exactly what you'd get at a carvery (kind of anyway) and this has cost about £3.00 for all 3 of us to eat with leftovers and tons of her roasties she likes :D Think she was abit gobsmacked...but realised what I was saying. Explained that what they spend on the carvery, pudding and drinks would be equivalent to our whole weeks groceries or more and we eat very well.

Was I too harsh with her? I dont think so.

We have a healthier bank balance and even with a limited income now due to being ill and OH my carer, we are still able to save some money each month. We live basically entirely on benefits. I dont spend tons on cleaning products now, no food is thrown away. I buy nearly all value products, especially tinned items etc. Washing is dried on the line not in the TD as we used to use daily 12 months ago! Instead of giving all old clothes to the charity shop-I try and sell on ebay and make abit of pocket money that way. Cook from scratch where as a year ago I would just add a jar of something. Always shop around for vouchers for things I need. The money I get from selling stuff on ebay goes into a seperate account which is used solely for items we need (clothing etc) I check my online bank accounts daily and update my quicken money files along with this-so I know exactly what i have. We dont really have take aways anymore-maybe the odd one every couple of months, but normally fish and chips and OH & I share a large cod and chips..lol. I am more organised now. I meal plan and love the way I live...am I sad..lol???
