Have you tried asking your friends if anyone has already bought one? I didn't and it turned out one of my friends did - but I already hire one. I can't remember the name of the company I hired from (that's what childbirth does to you) but try to consider the following:
Free postage (including return envalope) should be included
A proper hiring period (at least 6 weeks, but better 8) so you don't have to worry about returning it on time after the birth
Pricing: it shouldn't cost more than £24 for a basic one (for labour). Some offer a range of machines for a range of prices.
Try Mama-Tens and Babycare - I thik I used one of them...
And no, it doesn't take the pain away, but it helps to reduce back pain in early stages of labour and delay the use of other pain reliefe methods.
