  • Hi

I used sma 15 years ago, thought it was great, no problems at all! Then I had my second child, and he just couldnt get on with it at all, something seemed different and even the hv said I wasnt the first to notice it. I switched to Cow and Gate and havent looked back since, my third baby is on cow and gate at the moment.

  • I used Aptamil (milupa) for my two and found it brill, i mixed fed my 2nd and he seemed fine taking both. i would reccomend it to anyone.
Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts

Same thing happened to my 2, i was told that sma was abit heavy for the kids & also at the time it had gluten in it, so i switched to milupa 1, have not looked back since. Its got probiotics in the milk which may have helped them. I buy from any local baby clinic i pass as they are much cheaper than the shops.
No one said it was gonna be easy!
  • My son Olly had terrible constipation on cow and Gate so we switched him to Omneo comfort at my midwifes suggestion. It is more expensive but it sorted out his little tummy.

Evie was fine on Cow and Gate Premium. I did try the cow and gate for hungrier babies (blue pack?) but that did make Evie constipated, so switched back to premium.

we moved from SMA Gold to SMA white to Aptamil(Milupa) Extra within a few weeks, Apt Extra was the only one that seemed to satisfy his hunger. Can't say about constipation as he had very little in fairness but again we wereadvised the cooled boiled water route in between feeds if need be.

On the other points raised about storing and boiling kettles etc., since about 6 weeks we've just been sterilising his bottles in an evening and filling with the boiled water. But we don't actually add any milk powder until he's due to have the bottle. Most of the bottles we keep room temp apart from evening ones which we store over night then get back out in the morning. if we're out and about we just take a bottle of the water with one of the powder compartment dispensers. No need to keep bottles cool all day

Have to agree! We did this with both of my kids-never stored made up bottles (it also cuts out waste-if bottles not used in 24 hours, only waste water, not powder!) The powder dispensers are fab-get them from Boots/Tesco (Avent do one!)

We originally used Cow and Gate but both mine were hungry babies and DS1 was EXTREMELY sicky!!! We use Milupa Milumil & it was brilliant! It satisfied them both and sickness was greatly reduced. Its slightly cheaper than the Aptamil, don't really know what the difference is though! My midwife advised that, as long as you're not changing the brand all the time, changing the brand once/twice is not a real problem. Probably best to discuss with your H/V or midwife first though!

    Best of luck!! ;)

Thank goodness we aren't the only ones who do the water thing, was getting worried!

As for Aptamil v Milumil, pretty much only difference are vitamin/mineral/energy contents. We only ended up with Aptamil as it offered most energy(kCal) per 100ml compared to others which seemed to be junior Tides requirement, likewise iwth follow on milk. Aptamil forward had highest kCal value but similar vitamin content so we stuck with it

When I had my two I was told by the HV that breastfed babies don't need extra drinks but formula fed ones do. I was told to always give cooled boiled water when using formula and I did this with the youngest (eldest I managed to breastfeed :) )

Found this which may be of use?

my baby hasn't had constipation but has had colic and wind. he needs a bit of water, especially if he's been sweaty. we've tried a couple of milks, SMA didn't suit him and we went onto omneo comfort milk which was great. they don't make a hungry baby version though (and it can't be mixed at room temp so it's awkward when out and about, they don't do a ready made carton either)), so we've ended up on aptamil with colief drops to reduce the lactose content. a few people have told me the aptamil is closest to breastmilk and is easy to digest, it's all just hearsay though. midwives and health visitors say the milks are all the same, they're not allowed to express a preference.

i bought avent travel pots, they have 3 compartments for holding measured out formula until you're ready to add it to the bottle of water. recently i also found tommy tippee containers, they do the same job but they actually fit inside the bottle, taking up less space. http://www.kiddicare.com/invt/xdlttp3compjlee

  • those tommee tippes look great, my avent ones (I had 2) used to leak powder everywhere as the lid wouldnt seal properly, but then my avent bottles leaked everywhere too. have you purchased those tommy tippee ones just wondered how many ounces is the max you can make up ? ? (pre-thinking here, as we aim to have a number 3 by this time next year)
  • Hi! I started wiening my baby onto formulae at 3 months due to complete exhaustion!
I put her on sma and she was constipated aswell as not seeming to enjoy it at all.
After trying a few other milks, I left the sma and threw it away, I then tried cow and gate which she took to quite naturally which she is still on well step three now.
In my opinion sma, when compared to other brands seems to have a very stromg chemical smell! I didnt ask my mid wife about it , i would reccommend of course, I just did a bit of research in stead!
