Baby Milk advice please

For one reason or another we were unable to breastfeed so midwife put baby onto SMA Gold. We are buying the ready made cartons (its easier) YEs, I know its more expensive, but alot easier than having to boil the kettle all the time!

Well the problem is this. Our 16 day old baby appears to get very very constipated on it. We have taken to giving her 1oz of water twice a day to ensure she is hydrated enough but are considering options of changing her feed at the minute

We have been told that the Milupa baby milk is very good and maybe not quite so heavy on babys tummy!

Anybody had the same symptoms out there or indeed experience of Milupa?

If it is anygood, where is the best place to buy it ready made, in big cartons if possible?

Regards

  • I would check for advice from your midwife or health visitor, before changing milks.

My 5 week old is having either SMA gold or white once or twice a day to supplement breastfeeding, I was using the ready made cartons (by the way, the small cartons are cheaper per mil than the large cartons in tescos, don't know about other stockists) I am still keeping the ready made in for emergencies/middle of the night/going out etc BUT have switched to the powdered as both midwives & HV have advised it doesn't have to be heated up if it is given at room temp. I make up 2 bottles in the morning, stick one in fridge and leave one out ready for use & just get the spare out of the fridge to warm to room temp if the first gets used up before bedtime.

Sorry, don't know about constipation as Spud doesn't have that problem!!!

Not exactly what you were asking but thought it might help anyway.

I changed my eldests milk from cow and gate to SMA. The cow and gate wasn't suiting him and we were having s & d. When i changed over the sickness stopped, but the runny nappys continued for a few days more.

I don't know if all brands do it, but you used to be able to buy sachets of formula feed in 4oz/6oz/8oz sizes. These were cheaper than ready to feed cartons but not as cheap as the tins.

Neither of my 2 would take warm milk, the eldest was too impatient to wait, the youngest wouldn't take warm food even when I started weaning, she was over 1 before she would try anything warm.

I ended up having to use formula as i didn't produce enough milk and my baby was starving - she suffered from terrible constipation on formula (we used cow and gate organic). My HV suggested very dilute apple juice (when she was very little it was 1tsp apple juice in two or three ounces water - very dilute) - she was well under 3 months when we used this and it worked well. I would check with your HV if this is okay for your baby...we also found that a bath used to sometimes do the trick...not sure why.
She carried on having constipation until we started weaning her...then went to the other extreme as she's a complete "max wilde" and mad for apples, carrots, nectarines and other poo inducing foodstuffs...

what evermilk your on (or breastfeeding) some babies are prone to constipation, cooled boiled water is the best advice that is offered, however a bath or tummy massage with a warm hot water bottle does the trick....the problem with a baby under 3 months is that most of the medicines are not licenced for this age use.

if you try to use a very diluted fruit juice (1pt to 10pts water) that has been suggested in one of the earlier posts, try and avoid a citrus, as citrus juice and small babies stomachs do not bear well. instead try something like apple, grape juice or even prune

try not to change your milk at present as you'll still have some sort of probs.

we moved from SMA Gold to SMA white to Aptamil(Milupa) Extra within a few weeks, Apt Extra was the only one that seemed to satisfy his hunger. Can't say about constipation as he had very little in fairness but again we wereadvised the cooled boiled water route in between feeds if need be.

On the other points raised about storing and boiling kettles etc., since about 6 weeks we've just been sterilising his bottles in an evening and filling with the boiled water. But we don't actually add any milk powder until he's due to have the bottle. Most of the bottles we keep room temp apart from evening ones which we store over night then get back out in the morning. if we're out and about we just take a bottle of the water with one of the powder compartment dispensers. No need to keep bottles cool all day

i had the same problem with my daughter on sma. i had to change her to farleys because it wasnt so heavy and then she was fine.
  • Tummy massage is great for colic & constipation - your health visitor should be able to show you a couple of likely moves even though full massage is best done after the baby is 6 weeks old.

We didn't have the constipation trouble, but most of the bottlefeeding mums in my support group have mentioned that they had to try a few brands till they found the right one for their baby - every one's different after all.

    Good luck!

I used farleys for hungrier baby for my two little ones, tried milupa but made vomit really really smelly!! I agree with the cooled boiled water not sure about apple juice for baby so young. If you decide to use powdered milk buy at local health centre or baby clinic where it is cheaper. Good luck.
  • We tried SMA gold at the hospital and the baby wouldnt take it. The midwifes then offered Milupa and it worked a treat. The midwifes said that it was because Milupa milk is the closest milk to breastmilk (ie it is thinner) and therefore is easier to digest. For constapation the midwife recommended water and if that didnt work then to add 1 drop (and 1 drop only) of fresh squezzed orange juice- which worked a treat.

    Hope that helps.
