I am thinking of cancelling my dial up btsurftime and go with Tesco broadband. There is not much difference in price but tesco offers (512k) whereas bt basic offers (1mb). Is it 512k a bit slow, am interested with tesco because the unlimited download limit?

the only real difference is that tesco is half (512k) the BT speed and unlimited, and BT is 1mb with 1Gb cap - and also Tesco is on a datastream service - which is not as reliable as BT's IP stream service.

Its not that 512k is slow - its 10x faster than dialup! I use 512k and I still find it pretty fast, and can manage todownload 1Gb a day on my connection.

If you are just looking for a basic fast service, then zazizam offer a 2mb, 2Gb connection for £11.99 a month - if you can't get 2mb on your line, you get 1mb, cant't get that, then you'll have 512k - https://www.zazizam.com/broadband/home - I use these guys, and I do recommend them :)
  • oranabana - Virgin.net have changed their T&C's a few months ago. Customers signed-up after June this year will need to pay £50 if they cancel within 12 months.

You reccommend Zaziam. I have just looked at their web site and it looks a bit like Onetel's set up. Do you know if they are from the same stable?

I too have been with Tesco since its inception and have been very pleased with it, fast enough at 512 for me.

At the moment its £14.97 a month if you join up for their Home Phone service.
You can join with their Talk1 package here with no monthly charge and use 1899/18866 for your actual calls icon7.gif
  • Ive been with e7even for just over 6 weeks - delighted so far. £240 for 2 years 1mb uncapped internet access. Worth the chance I thought.

I also extended my contract for a further 8 mths for only an additional £50. If my line could have taken it,(alas not - too far from exchange) I could have upgraded to 2mb and got an extra 4mths for £50 also. This however was a special offer that was sent to me (poss all e7even users) just last week as they were celebrating their 3rd anniversary.

All in all I have broadband until April 2008 which has cost me £290, less than £9.06 a month, less than half the cost of most other places.
If at first you don't succeed - destroy all evidence that you tried.

As far as I know - Zazizam has nothing to do with One Tel - zazizam is £8 a month cheaper than onetel for pretty much the same 2mb, 2gb package they haveand I cannot really see any similarities
  • I think ADSL4Less would be your best bet.

Thanks for this information. I understand, it's £14.97 a month if I join their home service as well and it is free which means I could continue to use 18866 for 01 & 01 numbers. Do I have to use their telephone service after I have subscribed as I use BT for my international calls like cheapest call which means I will not really make any calls through tesco, will that matter, I wonder?

Also with btyahoo surftime, I have to ring billing to cancel and then 150 to cancel surftime, twice I am told as BT is my ISP provider. Please what do I need to do if I want to go with Tesco Broadband besides cancelling btyahoo surftime? I guess, I can get a broadband cd and insert it on my computer, is that all I need to do? Newbie here, be gentle. How long will it take before it is activated? Thanks.

just go to tesco.com and find broadband, and just signup to it - simple - then wait 7-10 working days for it to get activated

tesco provides its 512k on datastream, which is inferior to IP stream (which the big ISPs, and zazizam - which i recommended - use). tesco are known not to let their users migrate away/move to a different broadband provider, but not issuing MAC codes that allow you to do so - this is probably because it is run by NTL

I'll be honest, ADSL4LESS would not be your best bet if you are considering downloading a lot.

I was with them for 2 months and they sent me a letter saying "a certain number of users including youself are downloading significantly more data than other making it a less than 100% service for those who aren't".

They cut me off in the next 14 days.

I switched to Hot Chilli and they've been ok since, although had me on 512k for the next 3 months instead of 1MB :-(
