so will it work as good as my P4 3.0Ghz desktop or am I barking up the wrong laptop...:D

The processor itself should work faster than a P4 3Ghz processor yes. The technology is newer and slicker and therefore 'should' be faster!

Cram as much RAM in as you can (no less than 2Gb) and this will aid the overall speed of your system.

Also as you will be browsing the t'interweb...It is worth downloading free spyware killers such as adaware and spybot. If you run these every week or so, they will get rid of spyware and other associated 'rubbish' that your system will collect online. This too will keep a lot of unwanted rubbish running in the background, hence allowing your system to run smoother.

thanks john it comes with 4gb of ram although I have an 8gb usb pendrive that I am using at the moment to speed up my system using the ready boost in vista

    see here...

although I will only have £500 saved in 4 weeks it will be worth waiting afew more weeks to save up the rest and get this one...the other one is £499 so I may as well save the other £191 and buy this baby...

and I already have spybot running and to be honest it never picks anything up...
I use windows defender to turn stuff off at start-up that doesn't need to be started up until I want to use it...and I am using AVG for anti-virus but vista doesn't seem to like it to much so might go for avast anti-virus when I get th laptop...
    so what do you think...
    nice isn't it ...
it's my birthday present to me although abit early as it's in november also my sons pc needs up-dating so I said he could have mine but with a better grahpics card cos he plays alot of online games so thats why I am getting it now and the one he has now is going to his mate which is a student so we are giving him that as he is always here anyway...he's like another son comes and goes he's studing to be a marine biologist wow ...anyway thanks for the help...:D

4Gb of RAM sounds good - As does the laptop in generla.

I think Spybot runs best when you run it to do a system scan yourself. Mine doesn't pick up a lot on start-up, but it does when I run system scans.

Adaware picks up stuff that Spybot doesn't and vice-versa.

That's kind of you giving your computers away to mates. When you change laptop's I'll send you my postal address! :)

Unless you are using a 64-bit Vista, you'll only be able to use 3Gb of addressable RAM with 32-bit "standard" Vista, it's quite a complex issue, but in layman's terms, as the OS grabs a chunk.

This gives a good explanation: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid&ID=929605
I quote: "If a computer has many installed devices, the available memory may be reduced to 3 GB or less. However, the maximum memory available in 32-bit versions of Windows Vista is typically 3.12 GB."

32-bit Vista can be forced to use it, but needs some tinkering, if you understand it, read about PAE here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa906211.aspx

Depends on yyour system though how much you'll see. My desktop has a 512Mb Graohics Card and I still get around 3500 Mb of system RAM showing.

Does PAE even work on desktop Windows OSes? I thought ti was only on the server versions.
