NEW lappy buts whats duel core all about

Hi guys after living in the land of AMD and Intel for so many years I am about to buy my first lappy but I don't understand what duel core is ...the laptop I am looking at is intel duel core 1.9ghz so if its duel core does that mean its 1.9ghz x 2 or what... abit to old for all this change... but its the way forward so help me understand what duel core and quad core is all about please... in simple terms please...thanks...:o

it does what it says on the tin

Dual core is 2 x processors (Brains) on a single chip.

So in your case you have 2 x 1.9Ghz processors inside...

It's supposed to speed up your machine. You have 2 chips running all programs, usually split 50/50, instead of one chip running everything.

quad core is just 4 processors on a single chip.

But remember software has to be written to take advantage of multiple cores. If it's not it will only use one. However it does mean if you have something processor intensive running on one core you can still use the PC as he other core is free to run whatever else you need to use.

My laptop is also dual core and it makes a helluva difference to the performance, heat and noise output.

All 3 laptops I have owned have been gaming laptops (i.e. top spec). The previous 2 were noisey beasts and gave off enough heat to cook bacon on!

The laptop I have now is massively quiet by comparison and gives off far less heat. Also it is far faster.

If the laptop you are going to buy is supplied with Windows Vista - ENSURE that you get at least 2gb of RAM. In fact, I wouldn't buy any computer with less than this nowayas anyway.

hi everyone,

sorry if some feel im hijacking the thread but have a relevant question.

what is 'core 2 duo'? as apposed to 'pentium dual core' mentioned above.

Core 2 Duo is the latest processor family from Intel, it's also got 2 cores hence the duo bit of the name. The latest quad cores are called Core 2 Quad processors.

Baiscally a Core 2 Duo will be better than a Pentium Dual Core.

thanks guys and gals I thought it was something like that
and yes it'll have 2gbs of memory
not bothered about how big the HD is although I believe it is 250gb
as I am going to get an external 500gb HD anyway...
also I have a 4gb pendrive that I use as ready boost to speed up my system so all should be ok...
it's only for emails surfing the web looking for bargains...and abit of shopping...and the odd letter or two..
I am just used to my desktop pc being fast and don't want to end up with a lappy that runs very slowly...
I am not a gamer thats my son...
so if its dual core 1.9Ghz x 2 why don't they just say its a 3.8Ghz instead of saying its dual core but 1.9Ghz
anyway 4 weeks time I can order my new lappy...thanks for all your help...ice:D
