I live in a studio/bedsit. Single. Alone. I am on a fixed fee of £40/month.

As a single adult in a house with a water meter I was paying about £12/month with the most expensive water company in the UK.

So I'd say your bill is quite low in comparison to both those.

I pay less than £300 per year on my water meter and I wash both cars most weeks. Bath every night, usually shower in the morning.

Do you catch rainwater? I have a water butt front and rear and use that for the tomatoes and strawberries etc. Occasionally, I might use a sprinkler to water the lawns. You could catch water for your pond - better for the fish too!

  • i wish i could check my meter, it's in front of the house behind us and has a cover over it and i cannot lift it. really irritating and i have no way of checking my readings. the company told me they read it electronically, took them 6 weeks when we moved in before they did the first one!!

It does indeed and is the only bill that gets my hubby's back up something awful, especially as we are as sparing with it as possible.

vygec as Gorgeous George suggests, why not use water butts to catch water for your pond. Even if you have to buy them first (they're not that expensive) it'll certainly pay in the long run. We don't need to top our pond up every day.

Also, the bricks in the cistern is a great idea, as is not flushing every time you use the loo for a wee only! There is a thread here about that very subject and you'd be amazed at just how many of us conserve water in this way, why not after all.

If you bath instead of showering, why not save some of that water to use for flushing the loo?

Even so you have a right to check your meter, you will be able to open the cover, can you take a picture of it ?

My husband and I used to pay £160 a year unmetered when we lived in the midlands, then we moved last year to Cornwall and now have to pay £39 per month and are metered.

There's only the two of us, we don't have a dishwasher, always shower, have a brick in the loo and dont flush unless we have to (which I hate but needs must).

I'm surrounded by water but have to pay an extortionate amount to have it my home ~ very frustrating.

If by that you mean the sea, I wouldn't go wishing for them to pump that straight into your home - AFAIK it is an expensive operation to de-salinate(sp?) sea water.

You say you don't have a dishwasher, but are you aware that a modern diswasher actually uses LESS water that it would take to wash to the same standard by hand?

How much water are you being billed for? The "average" person used 50 - 60 m3 per year

Oh yes, £160 per year is quite low for unmetered - you mush have had a very low RV

 I have a poll / discussion on Economy 7 / 10 off-peak usage (as a % or total) and ways to improve it but I'm not allowed to link to it so have a look on the gas/elec forum if you would like to vote or discuss.

I have just this minute applied for a water meter ..... 1 adult and 2 kids in a house and I currently pay £72 pcm

I don't use a hose on the garden, we shower rather than bathe, don't flush the loo every wee (unless I have guests :D) use a DW and have blocks in my loo cisterns. I reckon I should save a fortune. Can't wait!!
