Urgent: Put Wrong Adapter Into My Laptop!

I need urgtent help! I put the wrong laptop charger into the back as I orginally lost mine. The one I put in had 0.5v more then my orginal one and I belive 10watts more from the mains. However, this could be more watts (I am not sure). It now dont eventurn on (and the battery dead). I try to turn it on and get a red battery light and it turns itself off. I try plugging the offiicial dell charger and dont work! I have coursework to hand into 2mrw!

How serious is this? Should I go to DELL as it is 1 year standard warrenty and act dumb? Please help

Remove the battery and use the offical power supply, but i would plan for the worst you have destroyed the battery and even components inside of your laptop. The only way you can get to your data is taking the hard disk out of that machine and using an external usb 2.5inch caddy and plugging it into another PC/Laptop depending on your laptop model you may need a certain type SATA or IDE they cost about £5-6. You should be able to get one today from PC World or somewhere that is open.

    What model is the laptop?

0.5V won't make a difference. 10W more won't either as the laptop will only draw what current it needs.
Failing getting it working, tom9980 is spot on the ball with the advice.

you could be right re-reading the OP it could be the official power supply died and the battery is just flat, best case scenario. Is the "offical power supply" the one that was lost? that you later found and used or another one you bought/sourced?

Most important question remains What model is the laptop? so that someone can figure out if its using a SATA or IDE hard drive so you can purchase the correct usb caddy and salvage your work for tommrow.

Im going to edit this with further advice because im going out for the rest of the day.

Once i know the model or service tag of your dell laptop i was going to go to the dell website and look and check that your laptop uses either a IDE or SATA hard drive. Once i knew which i would be able to say go buy a USB (SATA or USB) hard disk caddy for 2.5 inch drives. examples of those are here then its a matter of going to pc world/curry's/dixons anywhere that may sell computer parts and ask for a USB 2.5 inch caddy for laptop hard drives that is compatible with sata or ide depending on which hard drive type you have. You will then be able to go home unscrew the hard drive caddy of your dell pull it out unscrew the disk from its mounting and put it in the USB caddy and plug it into another pc or laptop. The pc or laptop would then recognise your hard disk and you can pull your work from it.

Warranty would only cover it if you specifically bought accidental damage cover when you bought it. Check the invoice - or put the service tag into the Dell Support page. The service tag is on a sticker on the base of the lappie.

0.5V is unlikely to have damaged anything.
10W bigger just means the PSU is capable of delivering more power and this won't damage it.

However, Dr Who might reverse the polarity with success but you and I blow things up when we do. There is a +ve positive connection and a negative -ve connection. Somewhere on the PSU there may be a diagram showing whether the inside or the outside is +ve or -ve.

Manufacturers like to swap things about to keep us on our toes.

    +1 on what tom said
