Phone in water!

I have a contract phone with 02. The phone came free when i signed up. Well er i was washing up when my daughter bought the phone to me as it was ringing. Well as i took the phone from her it fell into the water. Now it won't turn on. Will i have to pay for it to 02 now? Will they send a new one or ask for this one back for them to repair? Will they give me a replacement.

My sim card won't work in my spare phone. The spare phone won't even turn on is this because of my contract sim?

Ok, unless you took out the phone insurance with o2 they won't sort it out for you. Next possibility - can you claim on your household cover - accidental damage? Might be worth a look.

On the old phone - which network was it on and perhaps more importantly what is it? If it's all charged up, the sim from your old phone is in (once you've dried it off!) and it's giving you the above message then the phone is probably locked to the old provider - there are lots of threads on the forum here about unlocking old handsets so once you know what the old handset is you should be able to find a way of unlocking it so it will work with the new sim card.

  • I have had a couple of mobile phones end up in water, I found that if you allow the phone to dry out slowly it may continue to work. Take the phone apart .i.e. remove back cover, take out battery and sim card, and then leave over night in the airing cupboard.

Hopefully it will do the trick.

No insurance i'm afraid..the old phone is a LG 7100..also my son has my old Samsung but i can't find it..if i can get the LG or Samsung working with my sim i won't let 02 know just in case they make me pay..

sometimes you can 'rescue' a phone that's had a swim but it's often fatal. taking it to bits and leaving it on some kitchen roll in the airing cupboard (as above) is your best bet.

don't worry about telling o2 - they won't make you pay for it - the contract you took out does that over the 12 months ;)

  • Ive had 2 calamities-one fell out of a top pocket into the loo-i took it apart, dried it out and stood it up over night in a cup with tissue in the bottom-all up and running in 24 hours. The second one went in the washing machine-dead a :money: s a dodo! salvaged the battery and sim tho so not all lost. I stick to 2nd hand nokias 3210s-got 3 in the house now-er-spares-next calamity!

  • you must considet yourself quite lucky anyway - I mean usually you would just have to bid your phone farewell in these situations...

  • No honestly most can be saved by, Turning the phone off as soon as it comes into contact with water....dry it off then put it straight in a bag of (uncooked) rice....worked everytime, this also works for watches which have steamed up. !!!! The Thai's use this trick and it always seems to work. But you need to be doing this straight away (well at least within the same day)...hope this helps for future splashes...hopefully you wont have anymore though.
